1 Mixtures Atoms of more than one type of element that are physically mixed but DO NOT chemically bond. Ex: trail mix, back pack, locker Components maintain their original properties CAN be separated by physical means.

2 Compounds Atoms of more than one type of element that are chemically bonded together. Ex: water, cake, table salt Property is often different from the properties of the elements that combine to form them (they become something new). CAN NOT be separated by physical means.

3 Compound or Mixture? Water Air Muddy water Ice Sugar water Sand
Sugar salt Salt water Carbon dioxide

4 Compound or Mixture? Its components can be separated by physical means
It has properties that differ from those of its separate elements It can be formed by atoms sharing electrons It can be formed by negative and positive ions joining It is made up of two or more compounds Its components keep their own properties It requires a chemical change to be separated

5 Types of Mixtures Solution – a mixture of two or more substances that is homogeneous at the molecular level; a solution consists of a solute and a solvent. Homogeneous – a mixture in which every sample of it has the same composition Heterogeneous – a mixture in which every sample of it might have a different composition.

6 2 or more elements that are combined COMPOUNDS MIXTURE
Atoms DO NOT chemically combine Components maintain their original properties CAN be separated by physical means Ex: trail mix, back pack, locker, chex mix, wrapped mini candy bars COMPOUNDS Atoms DO chemically combine Product is different from the original components (they become something new) CANNOT be separated by physical means Ex: cake, brownies, ice cream, table salt, water 2 or more elements that are combined

7 Compound vs. Mixture Lab
On Friday, November 18th, bring to class an example of a compound or a mixture. All items (edible and non-edible) will be labeled for lab and identified as compound or mixture by students. Students will tell the class if their item is a Compound or Mixture and why. Then, we will “clean up” the lab. Yum! Yum!
