2 Total Enrollment of Students The total number of students attending Wiley College is 1,200 since the fall of 2009.

3 Wiley College’s History Wiley College was founded in 1873 in Marshall, Texas. At that time that was the first African American college in Texas. The institution was founded by Bishop Isaac Wiley of Methodist Episcopal Church and chartered by the Freedman’s Aid Society in 1882. The first person to ever be president was F. C. Moore. The current president who was elected in 2000 is Dr. Haywood L. Strickland.

4 Notable Alumni Henrietta Bell Wells was the first female on the debate team at Wiley College in Texas. Thelma Dewitty graduated there in 1941 and she was the first African American to teach in Seattle Public Schools. James L. Farmer Jr. graduated from Wiley College in 1938. He later was a U.S. civil rights leader. He was part of the debate team who beat the University of Southern California in 1935. There are a lot of NFL players too. Such as Floyd Iglehart (1958), George Kinney (1965), Mike Lewis (1980), Lee Thomas (1973), and Kelton Winston (1968).

5 Extra-Curricular Activities Wiley College has many athletic teams such as Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, Track & Field, Intramurals and Cheerleading. They also have there own mascot Wiley the Wildcat.

7 Major Events About This College Wiley College is the oldest college west of the Mississippi River. This college is very famous for its debate team. In 1935, Wiley College’s debate team beat the University of Southern California and Harvard University. This made the college very popular.

8 Areas to Pursue I really like the college’s debate teams. I would find an interest in Culinary Arts. I would like that because I want to learn how to cook many foods and learn about them. Next, maybe I would like General Education so I could remember and learn new things about the subjects I like and strengthen in the subjects and areas I dislike.

9 Entrance Requirements A completed application for admission A non-refundable application fee of $25.00 An official high school transcript with signature and seal or a pass rating on the GED (for non-high school graduates) and/or official transcripts from all colleges/universities previously attended and A report of SAT or ACT test scores

10 Tuition and Room/Board On campus room and board will cost $5,620. Off-campus room and board will cost $4,540 Books and supplies will cost $286 Inn state tuition for full time undergraduates will cost $9,970. Out state tuition for full time undergraduates will cost $9,970.
