6 Professional learning for teachers The Australian Government commissioned the Gifted Education Research, Resource and Information Centre (GERRIC) at the University of New South Wales to develop this 2005 Gifted Education Professional Development Package, which consists of six modules to scaffold teachers’ learning over the course of a professional development programme. 7 Gifted and the National Curriculum ACARA statement on Gifted Education Students who are gifted and talented also have a right to rigorous, relevant and engaging learning activities drawn from a challenging curriculum that addresses their individual learning needs. Curriculum for gifted learners is guided by certain beliefs which include the following : The needs of gifted learners encompass cognitive, affective, social, and aesthetic areas of curriculum experiences. Gifted students are best served by a curriculum that incorporates both accelerated and enriched learning. Curriculum experiences for gifted learners need to be thoughtfully planned, written down and incorporate explicit assessment.
