Present Simple We use Present Simple to speak about things in general: I usually see my parents at weekends. You do not like it very much. She always comes late. She is a nurse. What do you like for breakfast? Some words, such as adverbs of frequency or adverbial phrases are quite common in present simple. I never drink alcohol before sunset. He often leaves before the end of his working time. We usually eat out on Fridays. He goes on holiday every summer. We do not see them every weekend.

Present Simple Present Simple is often preferred with the verbs such as: like – love –hate – want – need – prefer – know – realise – mean suppose – understand – believe – remember – belong – fit – contain consist – seem For instance: I hate you. --- She needs it. We don‘t understand them. It belongs to me. It seems to be a good news. It fits you perfectly. Do you believe him?

Present Simple Normally, Present Simple is also used with these verbs : The meal smells great. I hear you are getting married. It smells like fresh fruit. The pate tastes delicious. Verbs such as LOOK and FEEL can be used in both present tences: I feel fine. --- I am feeling fine. --- She looks good. --- She is looking good.

Present Continuous. Present Continuous often describes an action happening at the moment of speaking: Sorry, I am not listening to you Where are you going? What are you doing with the pen? Who is she talking to? Or an action not necessarily happening at the moment of speaking but which has started and has not finished yet: I am reading a good book. (not now, but currently) He is learning to drive. (temporarily) I am studying at a college. (temporarily)

Present Continuous. Or on the contrary to regular activities: I usually relax after work. --- I am going jogging after work this week. We grow carrots every year --- We are growing a lot of herbs this year. She reads a book a week. --- She is reading a really good book this week. We also use Present Continuous to indicate a change: My English is improving. I am getting tired. It is starting to rain. The Empire of Evil is falling. The following verbs are often used to indicate a change. (Of course, they can be normally used in Present Simple too)

Notice the differences between Present Simple and Present Continuous: It doesn‘t rain much in the Sahara. What do you usually say when you enter your classroom? You are selfish. I never get hungry at work. What do you do on Fridays? I never see you out. I always work till late but I don‘t mind. Do you ever listen to the radio? It isn‘t raining, let‘s go jogging. Why are you saying such stupid words. You are being selfish. I am getting hungry, can we have a lunch break a bit earlier today? What are you doing tonight? Would you like to come to my party? He is always working. He‘s a workaholic. Are listening to me? You look daydreaming.
