Multiplying Numbers in Scientific Notation
Multiply the coefficient numbers together. Then add the exponents to get the power of 10.
4
Example 1 Given: (3.1 X 105)(2 X 109) Multiply coefficients: 3.1 X 2 = 6.2 Add Exponents: 105 X 109=105+9=1014 Answer: 6.2 X 1014
5
Example 2 Given: Find the product of and 5000 using scientific notation Convert both numbers: 3.0 X 104 and 5.0 X 103 Multiply the coefficients: 3 X 5 = 15 Add exponents: Answer: 15 X 107 Final Answer: 1.5 X 108

Dividing Numbers in Scientific Notation
Divide the coefficients. Then subtract the exponents to get the power of 10.
8
Example 1 Given:8 X 104 / 2 X 102 Divide coefficients: 8/2=4
Subtract exponents: = 102 Answer: 4 X 102
9
Example 2 Given:9 X 102 / 3 X 10-5 Divide coefficients: 9/3= 3
Subtract exponents: 10(2)-(-5)=107 Answer: 3 X 107
