Ways to use Podcasting in a Teaching or Rehearsal Environment Improvisation: Record a piece (audio or video) without the improvisations (rhythm and backgrounds only). Students can download and practice playing their solos with the sound of the band behind them. This is especially useful for young soloists so they can get a comfort zone while playing a solo. Allows you to rehearse the ensemble sections more without sacrificing the comfort and quality of the solos. Example: Intermission Riff EpisodeIntermission Riff Episode

Tracking Personal and Ensemble Progress Podcast a rehearsal performance in the early, middle, and late portion of the semester. Require members of the ensemble to listen to the podcast, note what can be improved on a personal, section, and full ensemble level. Listening to themselves in playback is always an eye-opener for students. They hear articulation, pitch, and ensemble with new ears.

Applied instructors have been using playback for years. Podcasting makes posting and access easy for the instructor. Last podcast could be the concert & could be used for recruiting by posting on a separate linked webpage.

Additional Refinements: Free software download Audacity allows you to remix your MP3 audio. Website: audacity.soundforge.net Audacity allows you to take your MP3 podcast audio and add any number of improvements. Add a voiceover track with instructions or cues for improvisation or feedback. “Ticker” by Bill Holman

Change the tempo of your performance. This is very useful for charts you don ’ t have up to speed in the early stages of the rehearsal process. You can still change the tempo and use them for improvisation practice. Use best podcasts and add voiceover and create a montage for a recruiting podcast.

Now, let’s PodCast! 1.Open QuickTime-New audio-Record-Save As.. (rename) 2.Log-in to PodOMatic.com 3.Post an episode 4.Upload (import) sound file 5.Type description or instructions 6.Publish Jazz on the Run: Podcast Your Rehearsals OPTION: PodOmatic has an online recorder. Cool.

On your iPod you can choose to sync every time you attach to your computer. Good for low memory models. Erases old files from player. OR You can manually choose the podcasts you want to load to your iPod. Does not erase previous files. I like to listen to music and podcasts more than once and my iPod has plenty of memory, so this is the option I choose. I use my iPod as an external hard drive to transport large files.
