Member of the lipids group known as sterols It is a soft, waxy substance made in the body for a variety of purposes Uses: construction of cell walls & tissues &for the manufacturing of hormones & bile A certain amount of cholesterol is required for good health Pg. 7

LDL’S BADHDL’S GOOD L ow D ensity L ipoproteins Slowly builds up within the walls of the arteries that lead to the heart and brain. Together with other substances it forms a plaque or hard deposit that can clog those arteries H igh D ensity L ipoproteins Carry the LDL’s to the liver where they are disposed. The HDL’s protect the arteries by clearing the “LDL’s” from the blood. Higher levels of HDL’s help to protect against heart attack. Pg. 7&8

Lifestyle Contributors: Diet- HIGH Fat intake, fried & “fast” food Smoking- Smoking reduces HDL Obesity-Obesity is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. This also influences cholesterol due to the intake of food high in saturated fats. Inactivity-Studies show that exercise can have a steady elevating effect on HDL’s. Genetic Contributors: Gender- Men @ higher risk Age- Being obese at a young age will increase your chances of being obese at an older age. Family History- Uncontrollable Other Medical Conditions-Other conditions such as kidney diseases, diabetes, and hypothyroidism can cause abnormal cholesterol levels. Pg. 8

Before the screening: Set up all equipment and arrange supplies so you can reach them easily. Arrange setting so you can access the client’s right arm comfortably. To screen the client: Introduce yourself to the client. Making sure you explain the purpose of the screening and what you are going to do. Have the client complete the Waiver Form and Questionnaire while they are waiting to be screened. Collect this from them before you test them. Set up the following: a cassette, a lancet, a paper towel, a Band-Aid, two pieces of gauze, an alcohol pad, a capillary tube and plunger. Swipe the client’s finger with alcohol. Let it dry before the puncture to minimize stinging. Pg. 4

Put on a clean pair of gloves before you clean or puncture the client’s finger. Using good technique, puncture the finger with a lancet. Wipe away the first drop of blood. Let another large drop form and then collect it in the tube. Fill the tube to the black line. After that is filled, hand the client a piece of gauze and a Band-Aid. Immediately put the used lancet in the sharp’s container. Put the blood in the cassette. Put the glass tube and plunger in the sharp’s container. Put the cassette in the machine and press “Run.” After cholesterol results are ready, while still wearing your gloves throw away used cassette and other trash. Throw away gloves. Record the cholesterol reading on the Questionnaire and affix the print out on the client’s result form. Pg. 5

Keep the Questionnaire and the Waiver form for our records. Give the client their result form. Explain the client’s results to them. Answer any questions they may have. Pg. 5
