2 Why is the writing process necessary?
It helps organize thoughts and ideas. It can help the writer to use time efficiently and productively. It can help the writer to avoid procrastination.

3 Steps in the Writing Process
Prewriting Drafting Revising Editing Proofreading

4 Prewriting Set your purpose for writing. Identify your audience.
Limit your topic. Gather any information that you need to begin to write. Brainstorm to get all of your ideas down on paper. Cluster or map your ideas on a chart.

5 Drafting The writer does the actual writing of the paper.
Put all thoughts down on paper. Allow plenty of time to work on the paper. Sit in a comfortable place and avoid distractions. Take breaks when needed.

6 Revising The writer reviews the first draft and makes any changes to the paper that may be unclear. Rethink any ideas and rearrange sentences and/or paragraphs. Check that the paper is cohesive. Be sure each paragraph contains good details with examples. Make sure that the paper has a strong introduction and conclusion.

7 Editing Editing most often takes place on the final draft.
The writer checks the paper for clarity of content and accuracy of presentation. Writer checks that the language is concise, and that the tone matches the audience. Check for correct grammar and punctuation.

9 Proofreading Tips Read the paper aloud slowly.
Read the paper backwards. Have someone read the paper for you. Spell and grammar check your paper. Note: Spell check will not catch everything, and grammar checks may often be wrong.

10 Publishing /Final Draft
This is the last step in the Writing Process. Writer is now ready to write the final draft. Be sure to check all of the facts, names and dates. Be careful to read over the paper for the last time!
