1 SOL 3.5 3rd Grade Science Presentation by Elaine Bennett
Food Chains SOL 3.5 3rd Grade Science Presentation by Elaine Bennett

2 Producers Make their own food Plants are Producers
They make their food from the SUN, WATER, and NUTRIENTS in the soil

3 Consumers Can’t make their own food
Need to get food from other animals or plants 3 types of Consumers Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores

4 Consumers- Herbivores
Eat only plants Deer Cows Mice

5 Consumers- Carnivores
Eat other animals (meat) Known as Predators- catch and kill their Prey (the animal that is eaten) Tigers Frogs (eat flies) Sharks

6 Consumers- Omnivores Eat both plants and animals Humans Raccoons Bears
Pigs

7 Decomposers Eat dead plants and animals Help clean up dead bodies
Fungi (mushrooms) Bacteria Worms

8 Food Chain All of these organisms interact to form a food chain
Almost always stars with a plant (a producer) An herbivore eats the plant, then a carnivore eats the herbivore Grass mouse fox producer…consumer….consumer

9 Food Webs Many animals are involved in Food Webs.
More than one consumer eats the same type of food. Consumers also eat many types of foods.

10 Food Web Example -Producer leaf, grass -Consumer(herbivore)
caterpiller, cricket, mouse -Consumer (carnivore) robin, spider, fox, bear -Decomposer fungi, bacteria *remember, decomposers eat dead animals

12 Summary The students learned that all of the organisms on Earth are connected through the food chain. Humans are even part of it. We eat plants and animals. If we lived in the wild, we may become prey to larger animals (sharks)

13 Mini-Quiz Let’s See What You Remember!

14 Which One is a Producer?

15 Oops…try again! *hint: where does a producer get its food from?

16 Correct!

17 What type of organisms eat dead plants and animals?
Pick one Carnivores Omnivores Decomposers Herbivores

18 Oops…try again!

19 Correct!

20 Which organism is eaten?
Predator or Prey

21 Oops…try again!

22 Correct!

23 What do omnivores eat? Meat Plants Plants and animals Potato chips

24 Oops…try again!

25 Correct!

26 Nice Job!! Quiz completed
Don’t forget to visit the cool websites about the food chain Visit the library and find a book about your favorite animal What kind of food does it eat? Does anything eat that animal?

27 SOL 3.5 The student will investigate and understand relationships among organisms in aquatic and terrestrial food chains a. producer, consumer, decomposer b. herbivore, carnivore, omnivore c. producer, prey
