PRODUCERS, CONSUMERS, and DECOMPOSERS Objective: Can I identify producers, consumers, scavengers, and decomposers in a food chain or food web?

ALL LIVING THINGS NEED Energy TO SURVIVE

SUNLIGHT is the source of energy for almost all living things

On a Post It note: Write: P= C= D= Write examples of plants/animals that are producers, consumers, and decomposers.

1. Producers Organisms that use sunlight directly to make food They do this by a process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS

PRODUCER EXAMPLES: Grass, Plants, Trees Corn

Reality Check Can I identify producers, consumers, scavengers, and decomposers in a food chain or food web?

2. Consumers Organisms that eat producers or other organisms for energy!

There are 4 Types of Consumers : Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Scavenger

A. Herbivores Consumer that eats plants

B. Carnivores Consumer that eats animals (meat).

C. Omnivores A consumer that eats both plants and animals.

HerbivoreCarnivoreOmnivore Shark Rhino Hedgehog Bear Koala Raccoon Snake Rabbit Chicken Tiger Fox Horse Deer

D. Scavenger Feeds on the bodies of dead animals.

Weird Science Having survived for 300 million years, the common cockroach may be the most successful and well- adapted scavenger of all time. Cockroaches scavenged dinosaur leftovers long before they survived on the crumbs and kitchen scraps of humans. Dead skin and fingernails are a real treat for them; leftover food is a delicacy. If these tasty morsels aren’t available, cockroaches can survive on such unlikely food sources as shoe polish, paint, and soap.

Reality Check Can I identify producers, consumers, scavengers, and decomposers in a food chain or food web?

3.Decomposers Organisms that get energy by breaking down the remains of dead organisms. Known as NATURE’S RECYCLERS and adds nutrients to the soil!

Decomposer Examples: Bacteria and Fungi

Ex. Of producer, consumer, decomposer, and scavenger

Reality Check Can I identify producers, consumers, scavengers, and decomposers in a food chain or food web?

Predator: Eat Prey Example: A Lion eats a rabbit. The lion is the predator.

Prey: The organism that is eaten Example: The Lion (predator) eats the Rabbit (prey). The PREY is the Rabbit

Turn to the next open page in your notebook 1.Draw 2 producers and label them 2.Draw 2 herbivores and label them 3.Draw 1 Carnivore and label it 4.Draw 1 Omnivore and label it 5.Draw 2 Scavengers and label them 6.Draw 1 Decomposer and label it
