1 Henryk Sienkiewicz was born in Poland in 1846. He was a Polish journalist, traveller and Nobel Prize- winning novelist. He is one of the most popular Polish writers. When he was young, he thought he would be a doctor but his plans changed. Henryk Sienkiewicz became a writer. In his books he often described the places after he had visited them. He wrote books which showed positive attitude towards Poland and Polish nation. When there was a conflict in our country he wrote books to cheer people up. He won the Nobel Prize in 1905. When the I World War broke out, he went to live in Switzerland. Two years later he died there. The writer’s ashes were transfered to Warsaw in 1924. The most famous novels written by Henryk Sienkiewicz are: „Krzyżacy”- „The Knights of the Cross” „Quo Vadis” „Ogniem i mieczem”- „With Fire and Sword” „Potop”- „The Deluge” „W pustyni i w puszczy”- „In Desert and Wilderness” „Pan Wołodyjowski”- „Sir Michael”

2 This is a book for teenages. The story is about Staś and Nel who are 14 and 8 yearas old respectively. Their fathers are engineers in Africa. One day their parents ask them to come to Sudan. When they are on their way, they are kidnapped. They manage to escape but then they are left alone in Africa. They have problems with finding their fathers. After dangerous adventures and fights with the natives, they happily find their fathers. Many years later Staś and Nel get married.

3 „Quo Vadis” is a historical novel. It tells a story of love that develops between a young Christian woman - Ligia, and Marcus Vinicius (a Roman patrician). It takes place in the city of Rome. This book has been translated into more than 50 languages. This novel contributed to Sienkiewicz's Nobel Prize for literature in 1905. Several movies have been based on Quo Vadis including the 1951 Hollywood production Quo Vadis and the 2001 adaptation by Jerzy Kawalerowicz.

4 The Trilogy- a series of three novels. These historical novels are about bad situations in Poland, weaving fact and fiction. The first novel, titled „With Fire and Sword” („Ogniem i mieczem”- 1884), chronicles of the 17th Cossack revolt known as the Chmielnicki Uprising. The second book, „The Deluge” („Potop”- 1886), describes the Swedish invasion of Poland known as The Deluge. The final novel, „Fire in the Steppe” (also translated into English as „Sir Michael and „Colonel Wolodyjowski”- „Pan Wołodyjowski” - 1888), follows wars between Poland and the Ottoman Empire in the late 17th century.
