1 “A Sound of Thunder” Pages

2 Cause, effect, and mood…. Cause and effect – the events in a plot are interconnected, like the links in a chain One event causes another event, which causes another event, and so on…. Mood -- the feeling or atmosphere evoked by a story Figurative language can help shape a story’s mood Metaphor: the night sky might be a soft blanket = a calm/comforting mood

3 Assignment Create a cause and effect charts to show the sequence of events in the story. The first event: Eckels signs up for a safari to the past. The last event: We hear: “A sound of thunder.” Identify the steps in the chain of causes and effects that Travis says would occur if a time traveler accidentally killed even one mouse (see pages ). DO you think his theory might be accurate? Explain. When the time travelers returned to the world of 2055, how has that setting changed? What details reveal the changes? What happened to Eckels at the end of the story? What is the cause of the final event? List at least three examples of figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification etc.) on page 500. Be sure to identify what type of figurative language you are listing. How would you describe the mood of Bradbury’s story? How do the elements of figurative language contribute to the mood?
