Energy Sources BY: EMILY ROBERTS-YOUNG

Fossil Fuels How it is created… Burned to heat water This turns the water into steam The steam turns the generators and makes electricity Advantages Reliable energy Helps economy Works on most new technology Disadvantages Transportation expensive Pollution of world Non-renewable source Where is it used? Fossil fuels are used world wide as an energy source

Tidal Energy How it is created… Tidal energy generators are placed in the water The tides raise and fall causes the generators to spin This creates the energy Advantages Doesn’t make green house gases Predictable rises and falls of the tides Long power plant life time Disadvantages Cost of power plant is expensive Can disrupt sea life and migration Usually plants are far away from places where it is consumed Where is it used? Europe, Canada and some remote places in Asia

Solar Cell How it is created… The sun’s energy is converted directly into electricity Mainly used in watches and calculators Advantages Used in remote areas where energy is hard to find Doesn’t cause very much pollution It can/will be used forever Disadvantages Only collected when the sun is out Very expensive equipment Takes a long time to collect enough energy to power certain things Where is it used? Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, the United States, and the Czech Republic are the countries using the most solar energy

Nuclear Fusion How it is created… Atomic nuclei collide releasing mass amounts of energy This is going to be the way we make our energy in the future Advantages Source will last a long time Very reliable No carbon emissions Disadvantages Waste is hard to manage Nuclear accidents may occur in the future Risk of nuclear weapons in future Where is it used? A lot of European countries use this as a power source

Wind Energy How it is created… The wind blows the propeller The propeller turns the turbine, then that turns the generator which makes the energy Advantages Low pollution Reliable/renewable source Cost effective Often used in the country side Disadvantages Must be windy to operate Location usually far from cities May cause noise and aesthetic pollution Where is it used? United States, India, Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, China, Denmark, Italy, and Portugal are the top countries that use wind energy
