What is happening? Why is it happening? (what caused it?) What are the effects? When did it happen?

What happened when the Arctic winds blew? LO: to explain the causes and effects of storm surges. Learning outcomes To explain the causes of storm surges in the UK (MUST) To describe and explain the social, economic and environmental effects of the storm surge in East Anglia (SHOULD) To use key geographical words and images/maps within work to help support points (COULD)

What is a storm surge?

How is a storm surge formed? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25220224http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25220224 - scroll down for video

Atmospheric depression (air rising) – 1.a depression passing over a sea means there is low pressure in the area. 2.This allows the water level to rise (directly beneath the depression) whilst the surrounding waters remain at ‘normal’ level. 3.This forms a bulge in the sea which will travel with the depression as it moves (in this case, southwards via the North Sea).

Other factors: High winds – ‘whip’ up the waves causing them to be bigger and more powerful. High tides – due to time of year and location of the moon, tides are high. This means sea level is higher than normal.

Where did it hit? 29 Severe flood warnings 141 flood warnings 63 flood alert What about Northern Europe?

What are the effects of storm surges? Storm surge Social Economic Environmental As we watch the video clips, add in the effects you can see. Give a little detail for each (i.e. where it is). http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-25266711 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-25266709 (no sound) http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-25278025

“Hunstanton Sea life Centre starts mammoth rescue operation as sanctuary gets flooded contaminating water sources.”

“Animal welfare officers are working around the clock to help dozens of injured seal pups washed up during this week's tidal surge along Britain's east coast. The weeks-old seals were separated from their mothers as the country suffered its most serious coastal event for 60 years.” http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk- 25313572http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk- 25313572

It’s not the first time the UK and Europe have experienced a storm surge. Read through the BBC article on the 1953 storm surge and complete the box on the worksheet.

Next lessons task Create a news report on the storm surge (either written or video). Your report needs to include the following: -what a storm surge is -how a storm surge is created -where the storm surge hit (you can focus on one area) -what the effects were (social, economic and environmental) -pictures and maps of the affected areas

Review: What happened when the Arctic winds blew? Learning outcomes To explain the causes of storm surges in the UK (MUST) To describe and explain the social, economic and environmental effects of the storm surge in East Anglia (SHOULD) To use key geographical words and images/maps within work to help support points (COULD)

Home learning Get pictures and maps of the affected areas of the storm surge for your news report. Due: Next lesson.

Plenary: It wasn’t just the waves that caused damage. Look at the images explain the effects of strong winds.

Starter: London was defended, but what would have been the effects if the Thames Barrier didn’t exist? What London would have looked like if they did not close the barrier.

The causes and effects of the storm surge LO: to produce an accurate and informative news report on the storm surge. Learning outcomes To explain the causes of storm surges in the UK (MUST) To describe and explain the social, economic and environmental effects of the storm surge in East Anglia (SHOULD) To use key geographical words and images/maps within work to help support points (COULD)

Recap quiz: 1.What is a storm surge? 2.Explain one cause of a storm surge 3.Which areas in the UK were affected? 4.Name two effects from the following: Social Economic Environmental

Peer assess: 1.What is a storm surge? A powerful sea flood 2.Explain one cause of a storm surge – low pressure over the sea, causing a bulge to form – strong winds. – high tides. 3.Which areas in the UK were affected? Low lying coastal areas, especially the east coast of the UK 4.Name two effects from the following: Social – people left homeless, possessions destroyed, people evacuated, jobs lost. Economic – cost of clearing up, cost of rebuilding, farmers fields destroyed. Environmental – sea life centre damaged, habitats destroyed,

Task Create a news report on the storm surge (either written or video). Your report needs to include the following: -what a storm surge is -how a storm surge is created -where the storm surge hit -what the effects were -pictures and maps of the affected areas

Things to include Things to explain: How a storm surge is created (depression, strong winds, high tide) Where the storm surge hit (you can focus on one place e.g. Hemsby, Norfolk) What the social, economic and environmental effects were Things to remember: Make sure it is in order (what> causes>effects) Include key geographical words Ensure Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar are accurate. Pictures and maps of the affected areas

Mini review: have you? Described what a storm surge is? Explained how the storm surge was created? The storm surge was caused when an area of low pressure….This means that….There were also strong winds…. As well as high tides…. Said when the storm surge hit? Identified places that were affected? Described the social, economic and environmental effects and given evidence. People were affected by the storm surge because….this means that Included a map and images?

Things to include Things to explain: How a storm surge is created (depression, strong winds, high tide) Where the storm surge hit (you can focus on one place e.g. Hemsby, Norfolk) What the social, economic and environmental effects were Things to remember: Make sure it is in order (what> causes>effects) Include key geographical words Ensure Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar are accurate. Pictures and maps of the affected areas

Home learning Over Christmas, complete the news report on the storm surge. If it is video, ensure it is edited. Due: First lesson back.
