Timothy Quigley Spring 2012 Dr. H. Yang We’re Making Maple Syrup!

IntroductionIntroduction For as long as people have been on earth, they have taken what nature provides and improved it for their own use. This fact is true to this day, as we have learned in Technology Education. To experience this phenomenon first hand, our Technology Education class will be making maple syrup from scratch!

TaskTask You will be embarking on a webquest to learn everything you can about making maple syrup. Use the websites provided in this presentation to begin your research. After researching and learning all that you can, your group will design a system to make maple syrup using only common items available in our lab such as: woodworking tools & plumbing supplies.

ProcessProcess Thoroughly review each website listed. Take notes and make sketches as needed. Create a resource (chart, booklet, etc.) to use to identify suitable trees in the School Nature Center. For each piece of equipment used in the production of maple syrup, your group must come up with at least one alternative that is readily available in the lab or school.

Answer the questions at the end of this presentation After completing your research, you must sketch a design of the systems you will use to produce maple syrup. ProcessProcess

ResourcesResources Making Maple Syrup - University of Cincinnati Clermont College How to Tap Maple Trees and Make Maple Syrup Tap My Trees Making maple syrup Syrup Making Video Part 1 Syrup Making Video Part 2 Homemade Maple Syrup

Answer the following using complete sentences and proper punctuation: Describe why the Sugar Maple is preferred for producing syrup. Can other types of maples be used to make syrup? If so, which ones? Describe the conditions that are necessary for collecting the sap used in maple syrup production. Explain why those conditions are necessary and fully describe the process they enable. QuestionsQuestions

How much sap is needed to produce one gallon of maple syrup? Why? Create a list of all of the equipment needed for making maple syrup. Next to each item, list a substitute item that is available in our lab that could be used. You may create a chart if you choose. QuestionsQuestions Compile your answers to the preceding questions using a word-processing program such as MS Word. Create a table for the equipment list. Attach a rough sketch of your system to the end of the document.

EvaluationEvaluation This webquest will be graded as a project worth 100 points. Points will be awarded as follows: – 70 points for the questions – 20 points for the sketch – 10 Points for the tree identification guide Note: Be prepared to informally present your findings to the class. As a group, we will decide which ideas to use in producing our own syrup.

ConclusionConclusion The purpose of this webquest is to introduce you to the art and science of producing maple syrup. You will utilize many of the skills that you have developed in Technology Education to continue a time-honored tradition. My sincere hope is that I spark an interest and respect for nature in each and every one of you. You’ll never look at a tree the same again!
