9 What We Heard at Trades Community Dialogue in Dawson Creek – View Video – Read Dawson Creek Daily News Registration of apprentices – high school transcripts, log books – more formal processes Continued investment in high schools and dual credit programs Out of school for a while – need to get them ready 15 – 25 year old – skills needed, re: math, more approachable people, testing help Assessment tools important (eg ITA Essential Skills) Recognition of prior learning (eg how Manitoba does) Completion rates – other ways to measure success Hand skills training needed Pre-requisite structure barrier to entry Pre-apprenticeship – introduction to trades (trial trades, student loans) Geography is a barrier and need more funding for satellites Recognizing truck driving as trade with training and higher standards IP exam results – faster than 4 to 5 week results Having to move around to go to the job Keep foundation funding Continuation rate low – need improvements Distance learning (eg how Alberta does) Challenge route mentoring Simplify the system 9

10 Skilled Trades Moving Forward in BC We’re listening and working with government, apprentices, employers, training providers, labour and industry to move BC’s skilled trades system forward.
