Solar Energy (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Three Mechanisms of Energy  Convection  Conduction  Radiation (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Convection  This takes place when molecules that are heated move from one place to another taking heat with them.  Examples of Convection:  Macaroni rising and falling in a pot of boiling water  Lava lamp (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Conduction  Conduction is heat being transferred from one object to another.  Examples of Conduction:  A pot sitting on a hot burner  Picking up a cup of hot coffee, hot cocoa, or tea  Ironing a shirt (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Radiation  Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through waves.  Examples of Radiation:  When you open your oven in your kitchen and the heat escapes the inside of the oven  The heat from a bon fire or camp fire  Lying out in the sun to get a tan  Can you think of an example?  Radiation can be reflected, scattered and absorbed. 6 Volume Review:  What is volume?  What is the formula for volume?  What unit will your answer be in?  Using your math knowledge find the volume of the following rectangular prism or box:  Base: 6 m  Width: 10 m  Height: 3 m (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Investigation  How do you think the dimensions of different solar ovens will influence the time it takes for cookies to bake?  Today’s task is to construct your oven so that tomorrow we can bake cookies! When you get to your lab station you will complete the following:  Step 1: Each group is going to receive a volume size for your oven.  Step 2: Figure out the height of your oven.  Step 3: Write your hypothesis on your Investigation Report.  Step 4: Begin your construction of your oven. 8 Creating a line graph  Label your x-axis(independent variable) and y-axis (dependent variable).  Remember that x-axis is the time in minutes and y-axis is the temperature.  Remember you are making a line plot! (C) Copyright 2014 - all rights reserved www.cpalms.org

Conclusions  What caused the cookie to bake without electricity?  Which materials were more effective and aided in the cooking of the cookie dough?  How do the dimensions of solar ovens influence the time it took for cookies to bake?  Are there any other factors that affect the baking of the cookies?
