2. I can comment on the characteristics of a character. Describe their personality/characteristics in 5 words EBI – you could add a quotation for each word

3. I know the role a character plays in the novel. Which role do they play? Mother, father, friend, counsellor, confidant… How important is their role? Does it have an impact on the plot? Or even on the other characters?

4. I can explain what the character represents in the novel. Do they represent anything in society? Do they represent a moral? Do they represent the thoughts/actions of a similar type of person in society?

5. I can explain how the author shapes our view of the characters Does the author make us feel a certain way about a character? How? Does the author allow us to change our opinion? Are we allowed to make our own judgements about the character? EBI – you can link these feelings/opinions to specific events in the story

6. I can comment on the relationships between characters. Who is the character close to? Who does the character rely on? Which characters does the character share a close relationship with? Which relationships change for the character?

7. I can explain the themes the characters are linked with in the novel. Which themes does the character embody? Which themes does the character allow the reader to understand more clearly?

8. I can explain how a character may be portrayed in different ways. Who controls this? When is the character portrayed differently? Why is it this character in particular?

9. I can identify the significance of the character's language. How does the character speak? Does the character change the way they speak? When?
