1 Point, Proof, Explanation Paragraphs

2 Topic Sentence Title of work (novel) Author of work Overall argument
Three parallel points (see Parallelism powerpoint) Example: In the Brothers Grimm’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White fits into the conventional female fairy tale character mould through her superficial appearance, never-ending kindness and naïve nature.

3 Point Present your points in the same order as they appear in your topic sentence Include a transition word Example: To start, Snow White is a prime example of a typical fairy tale female by being superficially pretty.

4 Proof with Context Include a specific example from the work as proof
This can be paraphrased or a direct quotation When using a direct quotation, be sure to introduce it with CONTEXT Depending on your primary source, your evidence might include facts, statistics, anecdotes, logical argument, examples, elaboration, description or definition ALWAYS include a citation (page number) Example: In particular, this is shown when the evil queen’s mirror tells her that, “Snow White is the fairest of them all” (2). Furthermore, the narrator describes her as fair-skinned, “doe-eyed” with perfect dark hair and luscious red lips (1).

5 Explanation and Link EXPLAIN how your proof proves your point
LINK your proof to your overall argument Example: The descriptions of Snow White demonstrate that unrealistic physical beauty is vital to her character, which is typical of the female lead in fairy tales.

6 Now add two more points, proofs (with context) and explanations (and link)

7 Concluding Sentence Title and author
Overall argument and three points stated in a fresh, new way Example: As illustrated throughout their fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the Brothers Grimm portray Snow White as a stereotypical fairy tale leading lady due to her emphasized beauty, exaggerated benevolence and highlighted innocence.

8 This is all ONE paragraph (it will seem long)
Remember formal writing rules (see Formal Writing powerpoint)
