Solar Power EDSGN 100 Sec. 13 Design Team 1 Kyle Feaster Alex Shivetts Kait Levin

Problem Statement For this design project the goal was to design a telecom cell phone base station that uses sustainable energy sources, a diesel generator, and sodium metal halide batteries to run the station. The station was to be built in a place that does not have a reliable and sustainable energy grid. It is to use renewable energy sources to replace what is usually used to run these type of stations.

Mission Statement The design team’s objective was to design a telecom cell phone base station that ran entirely off of renewable energy. Our goal was to design a hut that could power the station by only using solar power. With using just solar power, we would be able to cut out the diesel generator and save an abundant amount of money.

Timbuktu Weather

Solar Panels Efficiency: 11%-14% 1 m² of solar panels = 120 watts Watts per day = amount of watts produced X number of peak sun hours – Ex. If you are producing 120 watts and have 8 hours of peak sunlight, 8*120=960 watts per day

How Solar Panels Work Light from the sun strikes the PV module and makes DC electricity. To convert the DC electricity from the panels to the AC electricity for your building, an inverter is installed (see the diagram on next slide).

How Solar Panels Work Cont. The inverter will be wired to a new breaker in the panel which will feed electricity into the building. During the day, this will cause the utility meter to slow down or spin backwards. The solar panels are now supplying the building with electricity, not the utility grid.

Hut Design Will run strictly off solar panels Will need to carry and sustain a 20 kW load Only solar panels allows us to remove the diesel generator and save on additional funding How many Solar panels are needed to produce 20 kW? – 1 m² solar panel = 120 Watts of power – Timbuktu has 10 hours of peak sunlight: 120*10=1200 Watts of power produced per day – 20,000/1200=16.6666667 – Therefore, 17 one square meter solar panels will produce enough power to run the hut

Economic Analysis Average: $7.50-$10 per watt Average life of solar panels: 40 years Pays off in the first 10 years Saves 3 times the initial cost Batteries last about 6 years Inverter costs $2000 and will last for the lifetime of the system

Cost of Hut Building: $25,000 Solar Panels: 20,000 watts * $8 per watt = $160,000 Maintenance: $2,000 Inverter: $2,000 Batteries: Upfront - $2,000, Lifetime - $8,000 Therefore, with construction, installation, and maintenance of the entire hut the total cost will be approximately $199,000
