Holding Tools Prepared by Dr. Dale Carpentier Monroe Area High School Modified by Georgia Agriculture Education Curriculum Office June 2007

Holding Tools Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to accomplish the following objectives. 1.Identify and select appropriate holding tools for a given project. 2.Use holding tools correctly and accurately when given a woodworking problem. 3.Transfer measurements to boards for holding purposes. Essential Questions: What are the common holding tools used in the Ag Mechanics lab?

Block Clamp/Hand Screw Clamp  Has wood jaws so it won’t mark wood.  Jaws must be parallel to have maximum holding power.  Do not use on metal.

Bar Clamp  Come in various lengths.  Can be used on metal or wood.

C-Clamp  Used mostly on metal.  Can be used on wood but usually leaves dents in wood.

Spring Clamp  Works well on wood.  Does not clamp as tight as some other clamps.

Pliers  Used for bending and pulling.  Can be used to turn screws and bolts.  Locking pliers clamps the tightest.  Used mostly in welding lab.

Vises  Bench vise is used for wood only.  Machinist vise is used for metal only.
