Discuss how Chaplain Kapaun modeled AND nurtured virtue. Possible answers: He identified with Soldiers, leading by example and giving them the will to live. He reflected to his fellow-POWs a love of which is no greater—someone who was willing to lay down his life for another. He provided authentic religious ministry of word and sacrament, and mercy. b. Describe ways Chaplain Kapaun modeled and nurtured virtue: such as, saving the life of Herb Miller, giving away his own food, acquiring additional food for POWs at great personal risk, lifting the spirits of others, conducting Easter Sunday mass, saying prayers, reading Scripture, washing clothes for others in freezing water, sharing the suffering of the dying, etc. c. How does Chaplain Kapaun’s example apply to chaplains and chaplain assistants at different echelons and in different kinds of units, as well as those from different faith perspectives. d. How does the Chaplain Corps’ mission interface with efforts by the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE)? How is it different? Things to consider: Inclusion of different kinds of moral challenges: Black and white or gray? Be-know-do? Categorizing virtue, rules, and consequences? Religion as an individual resource for character development; UMTs as expressions of institutional commitment toward that end. e. Based on your assignment and service, how can you apply Chaplain Kapaun’s approach to strengthening the faith of others to build their character? Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School What: Moral leadership training for Survival Evasion Rescue & Escape (SERE) High Risk Level C classes When: Day 12 of the 19-day course Where: Camp Mackall, NC Why: Encourage the students just before beginning an arduous six-day FTX Summary: The Battalion Chaplain engages each class of up to 100 students and discusses the importance of finding purpose amid suffering, the impact of a contagiously hopeful attitude, and the power of sharing one another’s burdens in developing teamwork. The three topics are illustrated using stories from Viktor Frankl’s book Man’s Search for Meaning (1946), the legacy of the late Medal of Honor recipient CH (CPT) Emil Kapaun, and the words of Paul recorded in Romans 12:9-12 respectively.
