Designing for the Web

What is the Learning Technology Beta? Partnership between HR and other CS groups Creating the practices and processes to support leveraging technology-based learning at PATH Creating the initial PATH specific eLearning content for PATHwise

Introductions Amount of design experience A training project that you are currently or planning to work on

Objectives for Today By the end of today’s workshop you will have tips and tools to enable you to: Conduct a basic needs analysis Write performance objectives Create an outline of your learning project that incorporates Adult Learning Principles Have a rough idea of your next steps for your project

Agenda Cover the key principles of instructional design Write performance objectives and task lists Identify your audience and their needs Explore successful eLearning experiences Discuss methods for reinforcing learning while creating content flow

Does your audience of the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the task? YES No Pg. 3

Who are your learners Size of target audience Geographic location(s) Related experience Current knowledge Comfort level with technology if applicable Language Attitude about topic Motivation for training Pg. 6

What will they be able to DO? Performance Condition Standard Pg. 7

Action Verbs Appropriate Verbs Build Compare Create Demonstrate Perform Operate Run Inappropriate Verbs Learn Know Think Understand Appreciate Pg. 8

Task Analysis What tasks must be performed to meet the performance objective? Start with an action verb followed by a noun Link knowledge and skills to complete task Pg. 9

Initial Decisions How should the training be delivered? Who will facilitate the training? Pg. 11

Awareness (Reading/Listening) Active Teaching (Self-paced Interactions) Active Teaching (Facilitated Interactions) Active Teaching (In-person) Simple, low interaction ( ( Short, simple Articulate Presentations) ( Self-paced, highly interactive ( Longer eLearning with ) Professional developers ) () Web Conferencing ( LiveMeeting, Elluminate, WebEx ) Traditional Classroom INTERACTIVITY LEVEL Delivery Methods Today Pg. 12

Designing the Learning Experience Head Heart Hands Pg. 13

Adult Learning Principles Want respect Practical Self-directed Experienced Need Variety Have “baggage” Pg. 14

Sensory Modalities Visual Auditory Kinesthetic Pg. 16

Creating Great Visuals It is very important that visuals be clear and easy to read and grasp Use contrasting colors for easy visibility Try to use images to illustrate ideas or concepts Use limited sound and motion for emphasis Use to emphasize key points Simple – Use Color Emphasize Key Points Easy to Read

Auditory eLearning When possible use auditory recordings with eLearning Make sure that the spoken words and words on screen match Use annotations or motion to emphasize important words Webinars Have someone in the room that you can talk “to” Do not have a large audience in the room if possible Bump up the energy in your voice

Make them move… eLearning Design engagement slides to let learners explore concepts through motion Use animations and annotations sparingly to emphasize key concepts Use practice questions, quizzes, and case studies to increase interaction Webinars Use interactive activities such as polling slides and white boards Use animation and annotation in a limited way to emphasize info Find ways for them to interact either in discussion or practice

Global vs. Analytical Global Sees the forest then the trees Analytical Sees the trees then the forest Pg. 18

Using PPT for content Keep slides clean and easy to read Vary between presenting and interactivity Share stories that make the materials relevant to users Limit audio to 60 seconds per slide or short chunks for interactivity Use color and visual images when possible

Participant Materials Provide short materials with key concepts Include any instructions Make them easy to read and download Provide additional information online if possible Provide step-by-step procedures for processes

Quizzes Measure learners mastery of a skill Can be self-assessment Should be used with care

Testing and Dress Rehearsals eLearning With with your eLearning consultant to test Test all materials and tests You may want to pilot with others Ask for feedback and find ways to implement suggestions Webinars Do a complete practice – including using all online tools Materials @ 95% complete for pilot If using some pilot folks, inform them it is a pilot Allow extra time Debrief and listen carefully to the feedback

Creating Evaluations Can the learner meet the stated objectives? Do the learners need to be able to demonstrate mastery? What do I want feedback on?

Pick your delivery method Pay attention to adult learning styles Determine your learning objectives Test your technology Course summary Create your task list and outline

Next Steps Create your first draft in PowerPoint Meet with Amanda for eLearning or webinar consultation Meet with Dick for webinar consultations

Resources eLearning and Webinar Resources site Lingos resources for both eLearning and webinar – see handout Favorite Books Brain Rules – John Medina – www.brainrules.net Copyright © 2010, Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH). 28 Appendix Interaction Samples

Step by Step Process The Process interaction allows users to discover the steps of a linear process. Use the Process interaction to: Illustrate the steps of a process Walk users through a series of related items Explain a workflow or procedure

Labeled Graphic The Labeled Graphic interaction allows users to identify the key elements of an image. Use the Labeled Graphic interaction to: Highlight details of a photo Call out relevant parts of a graphic Explain features of a software screenshot

Tabs The Tabs interaction allows users to explore a group of related items. Use the Tabs interaction to: Walk through a list of related concepts Identify members of a group Compare the differences among several objects

Circle Diagram The Circle Diagram interaction allows users to examine the relationship of items in a circular hierarchy. Use the Circle Diagram interaction to: Show related items within a hierarchy Organize concepts into segments and layers Graphically depict a philosophy or approach

Timeline The Timeline interaction allows users to discover the events of a timeline. Use the Timeline interaction to: Step through a series of periods and events Guide users though a continuum Highlight key milestones in a schedule

Media Tour The Media Tour interaction allows users to step through a series of related images, video and Flash. Use the Media Tour interaction to: Walk through screenshots of a software application Create a multimedia tour from photographs and videos Provide a "how-to" manual from a series of images

FAQ The FAQ interaction allows users to uncover the answers to frequently asked questions. Use the FAQ interaction to: Answer commonly asked questions Let users search for solutions to problems Review subject matter in a "Q&A" format

Pyramid The Pyramid interaction allows users to explore a hierarchical relationship of related concepts. Use the Pyramid interaction to: Show relationships within a hierarchy Compare levels of importance of related concepts Detail steps in a process or methodology

Guided Image The Guided Image interaction allows users to examine important parts of an image or diagram. Use the Guided Image interaction to: Step through details of an image Explain significant parts of a graphic

Glossary The Glossary interaction allows users to reveal the definitions of words, terms and phrases. Use the Glossary interaction to: Define commonly used terms Explain the meaning of technical acronyms Provide understanding of cultural phrases
