12 How Does This Effect Me?

13 Drinking and Driving a Killer night out!!!!! Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and nonfatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006). During 2005, 16,885 people in the U.S. died in alcohol- related motor vehicle crashes, representing 39% of all traffic-related deaths (NHTSA 2006). Each year, alcohol-related crashes in the United States cost about $51 billion (Blincoe et al. 2002).

14 Effects A DUI results in a minimum of a 30 day license suspension and thousands of dollars in fines. Iowa SR22 vehicle insurance for DUI offenders is typically 3 times as high as regular insurance. http://www.luhs.org/depts/injprev/Transprt/tran1- 06.htm#Alcohol%20Crash%20Facts

15 College Students 1,700 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year from alcohol-related unintentional injuries, including motor vehicle crashes (Hingson et al., 2005). 2.1 million students between the ages of 18 and 24 drove under the influence of alcohol last year (Hingson et al., 2002). 599,000 students between the ages of 18 and 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol (Hinson et al., 2005).
