Caps for the Cure

Why are we doing this? The purpose of this presentation is to ask permission to raise money for brain cancer research. Where did this idea come from? Mrs. Amaya-Lozano encouraged us to participate in a project based activity that correlates with the novel and activities we have worked on in Mr. Guzman’s class.

The Fault in Our Stars Read resiliency novel in Adv. ELD class. Protagonists had cancer. Discussion revolved around cancer patients. The book is loosely based on the true story of a teenager who battled cancer. We also watched videos about two children who currently have cancer.

Devon Still's daughter Leah was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in June when she was 4 years old. Devon Stills, who plays for Cincinnati Bengals, sold over 15,000 of his own jerseys and raised over $1.3 million dollars which he donated to the Children's Hospital for pediatric cancer research. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=118 08484

Lauren Hill A month after her 18 th birthday, Lauren was diagnosed with DIPG, an incurable brain cancer which is a tumor located in the pons middle of the brain stem. Her dream was to play a college basketball game. She played her first game for St. Joseph University earlier this month, even though she is suffering from dizziness, headaches, and limited use of her right arm. Lauren raised $40,000 and awareness for DIPG. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=11812922

Raising Awareness This is what we learned and we want to help raise money for brain cancer research. Caps for the Cure is a ONE DAY event that students can participate in. In exchange for a dollar, students will be allowed to wear an appropriate hat to school. (No gang related/inappropriate hats!) We will encourage students to wear festive and silly hats by holding a silliest hat competition on Twitter. Students will take a picture with their hat and tag #ResedaHS. The student with the silliest hat will win a $10 gift card to In N Out. The money collected will go to pediatric cancer research. Flyers will be posted around school and we will also advertise on social media. Teachers will be encouraged to show videos in their first period. Envelopes will be distributed to teachers and the money will be collected during 1 st period. Teachers will be given stickers to distribute to students once they donate a dollar. Students will wear stickers all day as proof of donation.
