❧❧ Decomposition Reactions By: Andrew, CJ, and Kenny
2
Decomposition ❧ Decomposition reaction- A single compound is broken down into two or more products AB=A+B
3
Decomposition (cont.) ❧ Outcomes of decomposition reactions are often difficult to predict. ❧ Most decomposition reactions require energy in the form of heat, light, or electricity
4
Balancing Decomposition Equations It’s simple. You just need to make sure you end up with the same amount of the same atoms that you started with. Example: One of the possibilities of the products of water decomposing is H 2 + O. That is not balanced though. To balance it, you could make the reactant 2H 2 O. 2H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2 Now the equation is balanced!
5
Facts ❧ Decomposition is one of the most common forms of chemical reactions
6
S’more Facts. ❧ When a simple binary compounds breaks down, you know the products will be the elements originally in the compound.
7
The correct answer is C Interactive Questions What is needed for decomposition to occur? __________ in the form of heat, light, or electricity A. Moles B. Atoms C. Energy D. Decomposition
8
Interactive Questions Balance this equation: CaO Ca + O 2 The correct answer is 2CaO 2Ca + O 2
9
