1 Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Use knowledge of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs to determine the meanings of words.

2 Learning Objective I will determine the meanings of words by identifying the meaning of homographs.

3 Activating Prior Knowledge Have you ever read the word “lead”? “Lead” can be read as /lēd/ or /led/. “Lead” is a homograph because it has the same spelling but two different meanings? In this case “lead” also has two different pronunciations.

4 Concept Development Homograph : a word with the same spelling as another or others but with a different meaning and origin, and, sometimes, a different pronunciation. Homographs : words that have the same spelling but different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations.

5 Tell your partner what homographs are. Homographs are words that have the same spelling but different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations.
