Anatomy & Physiology Lobes of the Brain Cranial Nerves

Lobes of the Brain Frontal lobe – Top, front region – Responsible for emotions, reasoning, memory, judgment, speech Parietal – Middle portion – Responsible for sensory & motor skills

Lobes of the Brain Occipital – Back portion – Responsible for vision, reading ability Temporal – Lower side of the brain – Responsible for hearing

Cranial Nerves

Nerve I (Olfactory Nerve) – Smell  Test = Assess patency: occlude nostril & smell various smells Nerve II (Optic Nerve) – Sight  Test = Assess peripheral vision (Confrontation test)

Cranial Nerves Nerve III (Oculomotor) {Pupil contriction} Nerve IV (Trochlear) {Down/Inward eye movement) Nerve VI (Abducens) {Side to side eye movement} – Assess pupil constriction – 6 Cardinal Position of Gaze

Cranial Nerves Nerve V (Trigeminal) – Motor function of temporal muscle & sensory of face  Test: Clench teeth test  Test: Assess sensory function – Cotton wisp

Cranial Nerves Nerve VII (Facial nerve) – Motor function of face  Test: Facial symmetry  Test: Assess strength (activities)

Cranial Nerves Nerve VIII (Acoustic nerve) – Hearing acuity  Test: Tuning fork test

Cranial Nerves Nerve IX (Glossopharyngeal) Nerve X (Vagus nerve) – Motor function (mouth, throat)  Test: Uvula test

Cranial Nerve Nerve XI (Spinal Accessory) – Motor function of neck & shoulder muscles  Test: Assess strength of neck & shoulder muscles

Cranial Nerves Nerve XII (Hypoglossal) – Motor function of the tongue  Test: Assess speech (light, tight, night)
