3. On December 13 th 1903, the Wright brothers piloted the first powered airplane. They picked a beach in North Carolina, as there was a constant wind there to help them lift off the ground and take flight. It only lasted twelve seconds, and they covered 120 feet in the process. http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/wright. htm

4. An automobile company couldn’t provide the brothers with an engine that was light enough or strong enough for their plane, so they built their own.
