3 All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of the citizens of the United States, nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

10 Reading Activity Read the article “ What makes a Person a Citizen” with your 3:00 partner. When you are finished discuss and answer the following questions with your partner. 1.Who is automatically considered a US citizen? 2.What is an ‘illegal immigrant” ? 3.If you are not a born citizen, how can you become one? 4.What is considered one of the most important benefits of being a US citizen? 5.Name some ways to enter the US legally? 6.What are some of the challenges illegal aliens face?

12 What is a US citizen? An individual with certain rights and duties under a govt and who, by birth or choice, owes allegiance to that govt

14 How to become a citizen of the United States by birth? Born on U.S. soil (any of the 50 states or Washington DC) Born in a U. S. territory (like Guam or Puerto Rico) Born on a U.S. military base anywhere in the world If one or both parents are citizens and you are born anywhere else in the world.

16 How to become a citizen through the naturalization process? Takes about 5 years know about of American history and principles. demonstrate the ability to read, speak and write in English.

22 My example summary Today we learned about the 2 ways someone could be declared a citizen of the United States. The 14 th Amendment is important to citizenship because it addresses the two ways. We also learned about non-citizens living in the U.S.
