14 Graphic novels carry many of the same benefits that urban/street literature does. It also contributes to the development of both verbal as well as visual literacy. “Visual learners are able to connect with graphic novels in a way that they cannot with text- only books” (Gorman, 2003). Reading graphic novels requires the development of a special type of visual literacy in which the reader “must fuse the images and the text in order to fully grasp the meaning of the story” (Gorman, 2003). This type of literacy will increase in importance as computers with graphical interfaces come to dominate more of our professional and recreational lives (Gorman, 2003). Urban/street literature, despite its often “graphic depictions of inner-city life, involving drugs, sexual exploits, domestic violence, incarceration, and death”, is valuable in an urban teen environment for a number of reasons. For one, characters and settings are often more recognizable to urban teens. For another it can promote “multiple literacy benefits for teen readers, such as enhanced critical analysis skills, the ability to make sociocultural connections between fiction and reality, appreciation for the collaborative writing process, and… the development of the reading habit” (Agosto, 2010).
