25 Courses offered in English at Lund University to partner universities Surgery Course period: early September to end November or mid- January Course extent: 12 weeks (18 credits) or 20 weeks (30 credits) Obstetrics and Gynecology Course period: mid January 2012 - mid March 2012 Credits: 12 weeks (18 credits) Senior Clinical elective (Starting in 2013) 4 + 4 weeks of clinical electives offered to a limited number of students coming from partner university

26 Lund University / Faculty of Medicine 2011 International Course in Surgery Lund - Malmö Place: Departments of Surgery in Lund and Malmö. Teaching Language: English Course extent: 12 weeks (18 credits) or 20 weeks (30 credits; see below) Objectives: To obtain theoretical knowledge in general surgery including endocrine, mammary and vascular surgery and to some extent traumatology. Knowledge concerning pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnostics, and treatment options. Clinical auscultation. Performance: Three days of surgical auscultation each week, Monday through Thursday, at the Departments of Surgery in either Lund or Malmö. One day each week is reserved for studies. Fridays fully theoretical in either Lund or Malmö. After the formal course there is a possibility to continue with a clinical elective period including a small project. This part is evaluated by a written report. With this extension, 30 credits will be achieved. Examination: Written and oral examination during the last week of the course. Grades: Pass or Fail Prerequisites: Studies corresponding to 3.5 years of medical studies at a Swedish University, including courses in Internal Medicine. Good knowledge in English.

27 Lund University / Faculty of Medicine 2011 Obstetrics and Gynaecology course in English Teaching language: English Credits: 18 credits Attendance: Obligatory during the entire period of the course Objectives Knowledge and understanding After completion of the course the student should be able to identify patients with conditions/problems related to certain defined clinical situations (see course content). For each of these specified clinical situations the student should be able to describe and explain: patient care- how to examine the situation - important differential diagnoses - prevention and therapy - pathophysiological mechanisms Skills and abilities The student should be able to perform: to take a relevant patient history - a physical gynecological and obstetric examination - to judge the size, consistence and possible tenderness of the non- pregnant uterus and the ovaries - to take a smear from vagina, portio and cervix for cytological examination - to take a specimen from vagina and cervix for diagnosis of infectious diseases (culture and gross examination) - to judge the size of the pregnant uterus in various periods of pregnancy and to perform an external examination of fetal lie and position as well as an internal palpatory examination of the uterine cervix - to auscultate fetal heart sounds - to apply an external cardiotocography (CTG) registration and to interpret the fetal heart rate recording - to perform an amniotomy - to assist the midwife during five labours and deliveries and to deliver the baby - to suture minor vaginal and perineal lacerations. Furthermore, the student should be able to evaluate scientific reports and to base his/her management on evidence-based medicine.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology Course content The course is based on the following clinical situations: normal pregnancy and common pregnancy complications - hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, tromboembolic complications in pregnancy - fetal diagnosis with ultrasound - the use of ultrasound in clinical gynecology and obstetrics - miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy - therapeutic abortion - normal labour and deliver - common complications during labour and deliver - intercurrent diseases in pregnancy - the normal and complicated puerperium - reproductive medicine including infertility and contraception -gynecological infections including sexually transmitted diseases - menstrual disorders in the adolescent and fertile period - benign and malignant gynecological tumors - palpable abdominal tumors - abdominal pain -urinary and anal incontinence - climacteric and postmenopausal problems Teaching and examination The course is based on problem-based learning, case-based seminars and overview lectures. The students are assigned to various clinical sections of the Department. The students will train the gynecological examination technique in sessions with “professional patients” and in the skill centre Practicum they will have opportunity to use gynecological examination models and child birth models. They will participate under guidance in Labor ward, Ultrasound department, Out-patient clinics and Operating theatre Written and oral examination Grades: Passed or failed Prerequisites Studies in a Medical Programme at foreign university corresponding to 8 semesters including courses in pharmacology, internal medicine and surgery. Good knowledge of English
