Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 ISO 21469 What is ISO 21469? –ISO 21469 is a certification policy for – Safety of Machinery – Lubricants with Incidental Product Contact – Hygiene Requirements –This policy establishes the necessary steps to have an independent third party confirm the manufacturing process, formulas, labeling, literature, etc. of lubricants that may have incidental contact with food.

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 Example of “Incidental Contact” Potential point of contact between lubricant and food.

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 ISO 21469 How does ISO 21469 differ from other standards? –ISO 21469 goes beyond standard processes to certify both the facility and the product. Under ISO 9001 and 14001 guidelines, a company can not use a registrar’s logo on the product’s label.

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 ISO 21469 and The WERCS Label Interface ISO 21469 –Products traceable to authorized facility –Enforcement action for misuse of the Mark –Product shelf life and expiration date –Size of product container –Suitability of Product for use in food process –Product limitations and restrictions The WERCS –Facility specified in WERCS label format –Controls label format and use of the Mark –Lot number function of label interface validation –Transfers from ERP to label interface –Label details

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 What can you learn from a label? Appeals to value customers Product Name Packaged Quantity Product characteristics Star-K Kosher Certification Product Name Appeals to value customers Star-K Kosher Certification Product Characteristics Packaged Quantity

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 What is the value of a label? Defines suitability of use Establishes traceability Describes product’s limitations Aligns product to customer expectations – Value Customer vs. Name Brand

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 ISO 21469 Product Traceability Requirement Met WERCS Process Controls : Preventing Lot Number Error Labels will not print with incorrect lot numbers Laboratory quality control of lot numbers is provided through validation step.

Lonnie Hall6/10/09Product Labeling & ISO 21469 Label Interface – Confirmed Solution Since our implementation in 2004, we now have more than 1100 unique label formats representing approximately 500 customers. Summit has undergone more than 30 audits since 2004 with at least 18 containing specific elements regarding labeling. We have never received a non-conformance based upon The WERCS labeling. How do we know The WERCS labeling solution has been successful?
