2 Sectors of the industry 1. Live Touring o The Live touring sector is crucial to the survival and success of the Music Industry o It currently accounts for over $1 billion a year in revenue o The Live Touring sector of the Music Industry also ties in with other industries/sectors such as Production Crew (audio, lighting and AV specialists o It is also crucial for the survival of the artists themselves

Production crew o The Production Crew provide essential services for events such as gigs or concerts o They are important because without any production crew, they audience wouldn’t even be able to hear the artist let alone be impressed by entertaining visual and lighting effects

4 Sectors of the industry 3. Venues & Venue Managers o The many different types of artists vary wildly therefor so must the venues o There are smaller, more intimate venues such as jazz clubs o There are massive venues such as stadiums for popular touring musos o It is up to the venue manager to make sure that the elements of a successful show are there and the artist can do the rest.

5 Products and services 1. Publishing o Publishing is a service that benefits both participants in the industry and consumers. o Publishing allows artists to share their music with the world through CD’s, sheet music and other products. o Consumers have options when deciding how to listen to music. Audiophiles might be obsessed with top quality vinyl whilst a less concerned consumer might enjoy the easy option of an iPod/phone 2.Equipment hire/rental o This service provides musos, event managers, venue managers and others with important equipment they might otherwise not be able to afford o The Equipment hire/rental services also provides help in other industries such as the film and TV industry

6 Industry Bodies  APRA o The Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) is an administrative body that that acts in the interests of composers, music publishers and songwriters. o APRA collects and distributes performance and communication royalties for original musical works for commercial purposes  AMCOS o The Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society is an administrative body that collects and disperses mechanical royalties, on behalf of composers and artists, for the reproduction of original works

7 Inter-relationships between the music industry and other industries The Music Industry and the Retail industry:  Retail is important because this is where the hard work of production is shared  The Music Industry relies on retail The Music Industry and the Manufacturing industry:  Manufacturing is important because it supplies CDs/Vinyl's, IPods, sheet music etc.  The music Industry relies on manufacturing The Music Industry and the Production industry  Production is important because it aids with performances and other live events  The Music industry relies on production The Music Industry RetailManufacturingProduction

8 Economics in the Industry Stats: o As a whole, the music industry contributes substantially to the Australian economy several billion dollars a year. o In 2011, the national live music industry was worth over $1.2 billion o The Australian music industry employs around 300,000 people The Australian Music Industry has been identified as the 7 th largest music industry market in the world and it is continuing to grow.

9 Careers in the music industry 1. Composers o Composers write original songs for other artists to perform o Composers can make a significant income through mechanical and performance royalties. 2.Audio Engineers o Audio engineering is a very popular career in the music industry o Working as an audio engineer/assistant engineer concerns recording, mixing and the reproduction of sound

10 Careers in the music industry 3.Producer o A music producer oversees the development of songs o Music producers are required to book background vocalist and/or session musicians, coordinate studio time, and to hire sound engineers to mix and master final recordings

11 Workers rights and responsibilities 1.An injured worker can be represented, assisted and supported in the return to work process 2.All workers have a duty of care to ensure that they work in a manner that is not harmful to their own health and safety and the health and safety of others 3.If a worker needs medical treatment or time off work because of an injury or illness, they must make a claim.

12 Technological career path A career in the music industry that involves technology is an Audio Engineer. Historically, many audio engineers would be need to operate the mixing desk at once so that the volume and other knobs could be changed ‘on the fly’. In recent times however, this can call be programmed using an application such as Pro Tools. This means that an audio engineer has to be technologically savvy with recording software. This also meant lots of audio engineers were hired.
