1 Part 2

2 Psalm 42:1-11 1 As the deer pants for streams of water,     so my soul pants for you, my God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.     When can I go and meet with God? 3 My tears have been my food     day and night, while people say to me all day long,     “Where is your God?” 4 These things I remember     as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God     under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise     among the festive throng.

3 Why, my soul, are you downcast. Why so disturbed within me
Why, my soul, are you downcast?     Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,     for I will yet praise him,     my Savior and my God. 6 My soul is downcast within me;     therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan,     the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep     in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers     have swept over me. 8 By day the Lord directs his love,     at night his song is with me—     a prayer to the God of my life.

4 9 I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me
9 I say to God my Rock,     “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning,     oppressed by the enemy?” 10 My bones suffer mortal agony     as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long,     “Where is your God?” 11 Why, my soul, are you downcast?     Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,     for I will yet praise him,     my Savior and my God.

5 A) Passion is birthed in our awareness of need

6 "As the deer pants. "so my soul pants. "My soul thirsts
"As the deer pants....   "so my soul pants...   "My soul thirsts.....   " My tears have been my food

7 Lamentations 3:1-6 I am the man who has seen affliction     by the rod of the Lord’s wrath. 2 He has driven me away and made me walk     in darkness rather than light; 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me     again and again, all day long. 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old     and has broken my bones. 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me     with bitterness and hardship. 6 He has made me dwell in darkness     like those long dead.

8 Lamentations 3:  I remember my affliction and my wandering,     the bitterness and the gall. 20 I well remember them,     and my soul is downcast within me. 21 Yet this I call to mind     and therefore I have hope: 22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,     for his compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning;     great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion;     therefore I will wait for him.”

9 Job 19:25 I know that my redeemer lives,     and that in the end he will stand on the earth.

10 B) Depression can be a useful tool for self examination

11 Psalm 42:4 These things I remember     as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God     under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy and praise     among the festive throng.

12 Job 3:  “Why is light given to those in misery,     and life to the bitter of soul, 21 to those who long for death that does not come,     who search for it more than for hidden treasure

13 Lamentations 3:  It is good for a man to bear the yoke     while he is young. 28 Let him sit alone in silence,     for the Lord has laid it on him. 29 Let him bury his face in the dust—     there may yet be hope.

14 C) There comes a time to challenge depression

15 Psalm 42:5-6 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast
Psalm 42:5-6 5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?     Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,     for I will yet praise him,     my Savior and my God. 6 My soul is downcast within me;     therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan,     the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

16 Psalm 43:2-4 You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me
Psalm 43:2-4 You are God my stronghold.     Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning,     oppressed by the enemy? 3 Send me your light and your faithful care,     let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain,     to the place where you dwell. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God,     to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the lyre,     O God, my God.

17 D) Restoration....Deep calls to deep

18 Psalm 42:7 Deep calls to deep     in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers     have swept over me.

19 Psalm 3:3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,     my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
