1 EXPONENTS (1.4) by: Tonya Petty

2 QUICK WRITE Write whatever you know about exponents on a sheet of paper. (Take 3 minutes.)

3 PARTNER UP Discuss your findings with your partner. Then bring back to whole group.

4 OBJECTIVE(strategic teaching agenda)
The students will be able to use powers and exponents in expression. Alabama Course of Study: 6:1

5 VOCABULARY write on back of Washing Machine GO.
exponents tells the number of times the base is used as a factor; also called an index/indices OR exponential notation Number written as a base number with an exponents (numbers expressed using exponents) powers Numbers expressed using exponents base

6 or exponential notation X n base exponent power
Bonjour my friends!! This expression is called a power or exponential notation

7 Evaluating powers (write on GO)
2 3 exponent base Identify and read the Power or Product. 3 to second power or 3 squared 2. Identify the base and exponent. What does the power or product mean? mulitply 3 times itself 2 times. Evaluate the Power or Product. 3 x 3 = 9

8 POINTS TO REMEMBER (Write on the bottom of your GO.)
When no exponent is given, it is understood to be 1. Any number raised to the power of 1 will always equal the number itself. Any number raised to the power of 0 (except for 0) will always equal 1.

9 EXAMPLE 1 Write 45 as a product. Then find the value of the product. 1. A Power; Four to the fifth power. 2. 4 is the base; 5 is the exponent. 3. The power means 4 times itself 5 times 4. 4x4x4x4x4 =

10 EXAMPLE 2 Write 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 using an exponent. Then find the value of the power. 1. A Product; 3x3x3x3. 2. 3 is the base; 4 is the exponent. 3. The product means multiple 3 times itself 4 times. 4. 3x3x3x3

11 now OUR TURN

12 EXAMPLE 3 4 3 = 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 1 81 EXAMPLE 4 25 x 25 = 252 2 625

13 now y'all turn with a partner

14 Get with your 9 o’clock buddy

15 Write each product using an exponent. Then find the value of the power.
EX5: 2x2x2x2 EX6: 6x6x6

16 Now….Get with your 6 o’clock buddy

17 Write each power as a product. Then find the value of the product.
EX7. 26 EX8. 37

18 now your turn

19 1) 46 2) 9 x 9 3) 43 4) 11 x 11 x 11 5) 41 = 6) 40 =

20 Evaluate each power or product…..
1) 46 = 4•4•4•4•4•4 = 4096 2) 9 x 9 = = 81 3) 43 = • 4 • 4 = 64 4) 11 x 11 x 11= = 1,331 5) 41 = 4 6) 40 = ?
