Shining as Lights in the World Celebrating the life of Church Schools

Christ be our Light! Shine in our hearts, Shine through the darkness. Christ be our Light! Shine in your church (this school) Gathered today. Copyright: Bernadette Farrell

Parents, carers, staff and friends this candle has come from N Church School, and will go onto N Church School. It is one of 3 lit in our cathedral this Easter.

All 3 candles are travelling on a special journey around the Church Schools in the Diocese to help us reflect on the year’s celebration. 200 years ago the National Society had a dream that all children, no matter how poor, should have a chance to receive a Christian education.

The Society hoped that the light of learning would help them to grow and shine in the world. This hope came from their Christian belief that God sent Jesus to be the Light of the World, to take away fear and show people the way through life.

As we look at the Candle, let us give thanks for the National Society’s dream, and their hope in Jesus. We pray that, as inheritors of their hopes and dreams, we too may be lights ready to shine in God’s world.

The story of our school ~ part of the story of the National Society.

Song: This little light of mine

Song: Jesus bids us shine

A reading from John’s gospel.

Hear the words of Jesus from the Bible: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me shall never walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

A reading from Matthew’s gospel.

Matthew 5: 14-16 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14- 16)

Lighting the School’s own 2011 candle

As we light this candle, we look back with thanks for all that has been achieved in your school and look forward in hope for its future:

Heavenly Father, giver of light and wisdom, we thank you for (name) school and its (number of )years’ service to this community. Thank you for the commitment of those who founded this school and for all the teaching and learning that has taken place here.

Thank you for the staff and children who make up the school today. Help all of us to grow day by day in wisdom and understanding. Help us to grow too in our love for you and all people. As we look to the future, thank you for the opportunities each of us has to do good things for others.

Give us confidence to make a difference in our world, challenging what is wrong and championing what is right. Transform us into lights which will shine in the darkest parts of the world, helping and guiding others on their way, and bringing glory to your name. Amen

Amen The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done In earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive them that trespass against us And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen The Lord’s Prayer

May God the Father, who sent his Son, Jesus, to be the light of the world, shine in our hearts. And may the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among all in this school and community, and the whole family of Church of England Schools. Amen
