MATTHEW – CHAPTER 6

7 Response: Glory to you, O Lord.
“Don’t do good things just so people will see you. If you do, God your Father won’t do good things for you” said Jesus. “Don’t show off when you give. Some people give so that other people will say good things about them. The truth is, that’s all the good that will come to them.

8 “Give to the poor,” said Jesus
“Give to the poor,” said Jesus. “Don’t tell your left hand what your right hand does. That way, it will be a secret. Your Father sees things that are done in secret. So he will do good things for you.

9 “What about praying. ” said Jesus
“What about praying?” said Jesus. “Don’t pray just so others will see you. Some people do that. The truth is; being seen is all the good that will come to them.

10 “Go to your room when you pray,” said Jesus. “Close the door
“Go to your room when you pray,” said Jesus. “Close the door. Then pray to the Father you can’t see.

11 Your Father sees everything you do in secret
Your Father sees everything you do in secret. He will do good things for you.

12 “Don’t just chatter away when you pray,” said Jesus
“Don’t just chatter away when you pray,” said Jesus. “People who don’t believe in the true God do that. They think their god hears them if they use lots of words. Don’t be like them.

13 Your Father knows what you need even before you ask.
“This is how you should pray,” said Jesus.

14 Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
No Scriptural follow through: No mention of this prayer in Acts or in the Epistles, so there is no reason to believe that they took this prayer literally and repeated it in the early church.

15 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Refers to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Cf. Isa 61:2.

16 Give us this day our daily bread.
Like a Hebrew thanksgiving, bread can be ascribed to the manna or the Bread of Life. The primary point being the thanksgiving for the sustenance at hand.

17 And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Your forgiveness is not conditional upon forgiving someone else. You are forgiven because Jesus Christ paid for your debts. Because you are forgiven you should forgive (Cf. Eph 4:32; Col 3:13). [70x7 is how many times God forgave Israel, 70x7 is also link to Dan 9.] Jewish teaching regarded sins as “debts” before God; the same Aramaic word could be used for both. Biblical law required the periodic forgiveness of monetary debtors (in the seventh and fiftieth years), so the illustration of forgiving debts would have been a graphic one. Our Lord Jesus could not pray this—He had no sin to be forgiven.

18 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen. This word lead gives us the wrong impression because James says God does not tempt any man. “Temptation”. “evil” = evil one. The source of those trials. The last part is not found in some of the manuscripts.

19 “Forgive other people when they treat you badly,” said Jesus. “Then God your Father will forgive you too. What if you don’t forgive other people? Then your Father won’t forgive you.

20 The Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
