Case Study It’s January 17 th. Anthony Jackson’s mother just called and wants to know what his recent test scores mean. She’s very excited that he’s showing growth, as are both of his teachers. Anthony is in 7 th grade. In August his scores were 211 in math and 198 in reading. This time he earned a 218 in math and a 213 in reading. What do you tell his mother? Is Anthony making sufficient progress? What should his goal be? Are any supports needed?

As Good As It Gets “I’m drowning here, and you’re describing the water!”

Assessment & Data Driven Instruction Session 1: What Data Do We Have? Session 2: What Does the Data Mean? Session 3: What Do We Do With It?

Session Overview Objectives Explain what effective data-driven processes are in place at the network and school level Analyze sample data Organize a data analysis session

Going Beyond the Final Score

Logistics of DDI Refer to Data-Driven Instruction Plan Assessment: Defining the roadmap for rigor Analysis: Determine where students are struggling and why Action: Implement new teaching plans to respond to this analysis Systems: Create systems and procedures to ensure continual data-driven improvement What will these logistics look like in your building?

Preparing for Data Analysis Sessions Be prepared to analyze and support teachers in their analysis of: Global or whole-class-level results Student-level results Skill or standard-level results Question-level results Teacher Action Plan

Refer to handout Page 1: Guiding questions for teachers who don’t implicitly think through them during analysis Page 2: Support for leaders A word on: Using the Back Pocket Video Example Going Deep: Effective Analysis

Action: Walking the Walk “Even the most cogent analysis is only meaningful if it leads to action.” “It is vital that every action plan includes a due date for each key action step.” It establishes clear expectations, allows for greater accountability, and ensures that the meeting’s findings will make a difference in the classroom.” How can you utilize your schedule and observations to ensure follow-up?

Application – Planning Data Analysis Meetings Review the sample data reports. You are holding a 7 th Grade ELA data analysis meeting Friday. How will you organize and prepare for it? Use the case study form to plan with your school team.

Final Thoughts “Everyone has a plan ‘til they get punched in the mouth.” -Mike Tyson Have a Plan Be Prepared Be Flexible Don’t get punched in the mouth
