Plot Summary Setting: The movie takes place during the 1800s in Ireland, during the time of the Irish Famine, also in Godmanchester Quebec Summary: Irish brothers Peter & Nathan O’Neal travel to Canada after being evicted from their home in Ireland. Once settled in a small town Nathans life is taken away in a mysterious house fire. Peter knows that it wasn’t an accident and with the help of some of his friends, he plots revenge.

Introduction and Initiating Incident Introduction: Peter and Nathan are two brothers from Ireland during the time of the Irish famine. They live with their mother Nelly on a farm. They get evicted by their absentee landlord as they couldn't paying their rent, and the landlord wanted to use the land to harvest food to make a greater profit. But now the O’Neal’s have nowhere to go. Initiating Incident: : Once evicted from their farm, Nathan suggests going to Canada to live a better life, as promised in several flyers. After deciding to go, their mother falls ill on the coffin ship, in steerage, just as many other passengers, and passes away on Quarantine Island of Grosse Isle from Cholera. But in her dying last words she tells her sons of a cousin they have in the town of Godmanchester Quebec, although all she really know of him is that his nick name is Danny. She also informs them to stay in Quebec as other provinces in Canada aren't as accepting of catholic people, as the protestants, who despise Irish Catholics, are the majority in Canada.

Rising Action Rising Action: The O'Neal brothers make their way to Godmanchester Quebec, they rent out some farmland from a man named Daniel McBride he is a Protestant from England and owns so much land in Godmanchester Quebec that he basically owns it. The O'Neal's build a small house on the land they rented. Nathan meets a beautiful young woman named Emily, who is later reveled to be Daniel’s wife. They fall in love. Daniel finds out from Jonah Mill (Daniels friend) that his wife is having an affair with Nathan. Daniel ties up Nathan on a chair, and burns down their house. While all this is occurring Peter is getting firewood with his new friend Seth Mcdugle, as they return to Peter’s home they see it in flames, and hear his brothers screams, Peter tries to save his brother but it is far too late. Peter mourns his brother for several weeks, and stays at Seth's house, and eats nothing but old pemmican Seth had when he was a voyager. After going through his sadness phase of losing his brother, Peter starts realizing that he wants revenge on Daniel. He starts plotting with Seth and his wife Tanaya, a first nation’s woman that he had barter for from her family as long as they had access to supplies from the Hudson Bay Company that he was a part of, unlike some marriages that were bartered, their marriage was filled with happiness. Peter, Seth, and Tanaya decide that they would rob Daniel of all his money.

Rising Action A new person moves to a plot of land that is near Seth’s. His name is Craig Patsy he is an African American slave refugee that escaped slavery by the Underground Railroad and by the help of a woman named Harriet Tubman. He is very alone as the rest of his family was auctioned off, he had plans with his family, to go to Windsor where his children would have gotten an equal education, and they would have had as much as five acres of land, but those plans changed when they were all separated.. He introduces himself to Peter, Seth and Tanaya, and decides to help them in the heist, he also tells them about his experience as a slave and how he was whipped nearly daily, and how he felt like there was no freedom, and instead of being treated as a person he was mostly treated like an animal. Emily finds out about the death of Nathan, but before she could run away from Daniel, he captures her and locks her in a closet. She eventually cuts loose and finds a way to escape and goes to Peter. She also gets in on the heist, and explains how her marriage felt more like a trap, and like most woman she was somewhat obligated to be with Danny as he was a higher class division than her. After days of plotting they break into Daniel's house after he leaves to go to a bar.

Plot Graph Continued Climax: Group successfully enters Daniels safe, and they discover several upon several thousands of dollars. But Peter also finds documents that reveal him and Daniel to be cousins. Falling Action: Peter confronts Daniel about it, and they reconcile with each other. Conclusion: Craig kills Daniel, and takes all his money. Although Peter and Daniel reconciled, Peter felt as his brother had been avenged, when Craig killed Daniel.

Connection to History Class: In our movie we show class divisions when: Daniel (an absentee landlord) has much more power than most people as he owns land, this makes him much higher in class division, than a commoner in Godmanchester. Tananya is an aboriginal woman, which makes her seem like the least attractive woman at the time. She was bartered by her family to be Seth Mcdugles wife. Emily a British woman, she is seen as the highest class woman, and is seen as very attractive for men that wanted to get married. Most British women that came to Canada could read very well and communicate in an exceptional way, including Emily. Absentee Landlords: In our movie we show what absentee landlords are when: Peter, Nathan and their mother Nelly are evicted from the land they rented by their absentee landlord. Because of this they have to leave Ireland, and uproot to Canada, or else they would all starve to death. Peter and Nathan find an Absentee landlord in Godmanchester, and rent out land from him. Religion: In our movie we show Religion by: Nelly tells her sons of how people are judged by their religion in Canada, and how most Catholics were in Quebec unlike the rest of Canada which is filled with Protestants. A lot of Irish Catholics would go to Quebec as most protestants despised them.

Connections to History Attitude: In our movie we show the attitude of people towards people who are lower class when: The O’Neal brothers meet Daniel and see how bad he treats the town folk How Craig felt about slavery, and the cruelty and hardships he faced while being enslavement. Marriage: In our movie we show Marriage in the 1800’s in Canada when: Emily says how she felt obligated to marry Daniel as he was a higher class division than her, and this was expected of women across Canada. Tanaya said she didn't really have an option in her marriage as she was bartered, but also said that unlike some, her marriage with Seth is filled with happiness. Evictions: In our movie we show Evictions when: The O'Neal's and several other Irish people are evicted from their homes, during the time of the Irish famine. Slavery: In our movie we show Slavery when: Craig Patsy describes, that when he was a slave he has to escape via the underground railroad, and how Harriet Tubman an African American woman with a gun, helped rescue him and several other slaves, but on their journey of escaping she would have to shoot and kill anyone who would run back, because they would most likely reveal what she is doing, which would kill her as it is considered to be a black fugitive slave act. Coffin Ships: In our movie we show Coffin Ships when: Peter, Nathan and their mother go on board on a coffin ship on steerage, with several other Irish people as they were informed that they would be offered houses, and loads of land upon their arrival.

Connection to History Continued Barter: In our movie we show bartering when: Tanya describes how she was bartered to Seth so her family could have access to supplies from the Hudson Bay Company Voyageurs: In our movie we show Voyagers When Seth describes his old occupation of being a voyager and all the hardships he had to face. He also explained how he exchanged jobs throughout his life. Pemmican: In our movie we show Pemmican when: Peter is too depressed by the death of his brother to catch his own food, so he just eats old pemmican he found in one of Seth's cupboards Catholics vs Protestant: In our movie we show Catholics vs Protestants when Nelly (Peter and Nathan’s mother) warns them how different places in Canada can be very harsh towards Catholics as they are seen as the minority religion to the protestants. This is very similar to how the British see the Irish as in their minds the see them as mindless, lazy and disgusting people that aren't worthy of having jobs.
