2 Hurricanes Tropical thunderstorms or “hurricanes” are huge storms that can reach hundreds of miles in diameter and has a turning pattern to it. They have winds of up to 190 miles per hour! In the center of a hurricane is the eye. The eye is where there is the least amount of storms of a hurricane, but it can still have winds of 70 miles per hour. 3 The conditions for creating a hurricane For a hurricane to occur, it needs to be in the summer or early fall when it is still warm enough to evaporate the water from the ocean. It happens when the warm humid air rises from the tropical bay areas and into the cooler air above where it then cools and condenses the water, causing a phenomenon know as “latent heat of condensation.” if there are little wind shears then the heat can build up making low air pressure high in altitude. The low pressure air, that is now higher than the high pressure air, spirals downward towards the high pressure air causing intense winds to spin in circles, and eventually creating giant spiraling thunder storm. 4 Where and when a hurricane takes place A hurricane happens in the summer or early fall when it is still warm enough to evaporate the water in the ocean. This happens near the coasts of tropical areas such as the coast of Africa in the Atlantic ocean. 5 damage a hurricane can cause For the strength and damage to property of a hurricane to be categorized, we use the Simpson scale. 1- 75mph to 95mph; these hurricanes can do some damage to well framed house 2- 96mph to 110mph; these hurricanes can cause major roof and wall damage to well framed houses 3- 111mph to 129mph; these hurricanes can cause roofs to blow off of well framed houses 4- 130mph to 156mph; these hurricanes can cause roof and some exterior walls to be destroyed 5- 157mph and up; these hurricanes can cause a large amount of framed houses to be destroyed, trees will be uprooted and power poles will fall. Area will be uninhabitable for weeks or even months. Noaa.gov http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php, august 31, 2012 http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutsshws.php
