1 Areas of Interest for Children to Follow – Winter & Spring Spring Term 2015 Personal, Social and Emotional Development Begin to form relationships and friendships. Seek out others to share experiences Select and use resources with help. Begin to understand how to be a friend, for example comforting someone who is upset. Begin to accept the needs of others, take turns and share resources with support. Begin to understand that we behave differently at different times or even in different areas in Nursery, such as inside/outside, in play/at the snack table. Physical Development Draw lines and circles using gross motor skills, for example, at art easel or on creative wall. Begin to use one handed tools and equipment with support in a range of activities, for example, making snips in paper with appropriate scissors, or spreading a topping onto toast before cutting with a plastic knife. Explore and enjoy movement in a range of ways such as slithering, shuffling, walking, running, skipping, jumping, sliding and hopping. Begin to hold pencil between thumb and two fingers with modelling and support. Communication and Language Listen to stories with increasing attention and recall Join in with and anticipate repeated phrases and refrains Talk about what objects are for, and begin to understand language such as under, on, behind when carrying out an action, or finding an object Retell simple past events in the correct order Ask simple questions and give explanations Literacy Look at books independently, and handle them carefully. Listen and join in with stories 1-1 and in small groups beginning to sustain attention for longer periods and to recall parts of the story. Have opportunities to mark make for a wide range of purposes, and to talk about what the meaning of the marks they have made. Recognise own name, and begin to link marks they have made to the writing of their name, or to represent letters from their name in their mark making. Mathematics. Recite 1-10 in order, and begin to use some number names accurately in play. Develop understanding through play and practical exploration that numbers identify how many objects are in a set, and that anything can be counted, e.g. claps, jumps, not just objects. Begin to know that a group of things changes in quantity when an object is added or taken away. Explore shapes and patterns, by playing with a range of shape resources and making patterns. Experience and begin to use positional language in play, stories and activities. Understanding the World Begin to understand similarities and differences between ourselves and others. Begin to find out about different occupations and ways of life, including people who help us. Begin to explore movement and transportation. Talk about some of the things observed in environment, such as plants, animals natural and found objects. Begin to operate simple ICT equipment independently. RE Finding out about Jesus as a child and Jesus’ Miracles, Easter and the Easter story. Exploration of festivals and celebrations from different cultures and faiths, celebrating differences in culture, race and individuality. Begin to understand that we have similarities and differences to others yet we are all valued, unique and special. Expressive Arts and Design Begin to join in with dancing and ring games Begin to create movement in response to music, and to make up own simple songs. Engage in imaginative role play based on own firsthand experience. Explore use of different tools. Use different construction materials with increasing control and independence. Begin to construct using a range of materials with support, including making instruments to explore how sounds can be changed. With support, explore how colours can be changed. All children will be supported in their learning journey at their own rate and at a level appropriate to their needs, through a range of play activities and experiences.
