1 USDA regulations require that "all individuals working in or frequenting any portion of a radiation area shall be informed of the location of radioactive materials or of radiation areas; shall be instructed in the safety problems associated with exposure to such materials or radiation and in precautions or devices to minimize exposure; shall be instructed per 29 CFR 1910.1096 (ionizing radiation) for the protection of employees from exposure to radiation or radioactive materials; and shall be advised of reports of radiation exposure which employees may request pursuant to the regulations in this section." In order to fulfill these training requirements, the USDA has developed an online Radiation Safety Awareness course. This course can be accessed at http://usda.radtrainonline.com. You will need to register first and then you will receive an email within the next few days that will allow you access to the training course. There are several courses available, please make sure you complete the course entitled "Radiation Safety Awareness-USDA". If you are going to be actively working with radiation in your assigned area, you will be required to take the UW-Madison Radiation Training and will therefore be exempt from this training. Please consult your lab for specific details. This training is required for ALL individuals who work in a building where radiation is being used. The following locations are using and/or storing radioactive isotopes: Malt and Barley Lab, Madison Russell Labs, Madison U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center, Madison Great Lakes Water Institute, Milwaukee Horticulture Building (Moore Hall), Madison Plant Sciences (Moore Hall), Madison All employees frequenting these buildings must take this awareness training. Please Note: In order to access the USDA Radiation Online Safety, you will have had to receive at least one payroll from USDA for the system to recognize you as an employee. Any attempt prior to receiving at least one paycheck will not allow you access to the online training program.
