10 How big is the problem of sudden cardiac death in athletes? 0.3% general athlete population with a cardiac condition Grade 9-12 – 5 million competitive athletes NCAA, NAIA, and Jr colleges– >500,000 athletes Professional athletes – 5000 Excludes youth, middle school, master level athletes May be > 10 million athletes in USA Sudden death of 1:200,000 high school athletes per year
