Are UVM students aware of the trees they walk by every day to class? Gauging Student’s Tree Awareness and Engagement by Ariana Ferraro, Mariah Noth, and Alec Buzzell

Survey 99 students in the Honors College were asked to take a survey. Among these 99 students there were 48 different majors. There were 94 sophomores, 2 juniors, and 3 seniors.

These results are synthesized. Others include: Boabab, Ginkgo, Quaking Aspen, Magnolia

What is your favorite tree on campus? Almost everyone had a favorite, but they couldn’t name the exact species. Students would say things like “the big one on the green, or the big tree near UHN.”

What do you like best about trees? Majority of students said they liked the leaves and aesthetics of trees along with climbing and how they benefit our environment (air, homes for animals). Others include how big and old they get, and things we get from them (syrup, fruit) “Concrete connections to our natural past” “Time keeper of the seasons” “Their personalities”

For those that said yes, favorites included: -Waterman Green -Amphitheatre -Near the Catholic Center

How do you interact with trees? Study under them-47 Hang out under them-50 Climb-37 Slack-line-12 Hammock-7 Other-10 I don’t-23 How often is this? Daily-21 Weekly-42 Monthly-23

Other results -No one knew how many trees were on campus. -7 students knew what a tree campus was, and 6 0f these students knew that UVM is one. -91 students want more trees on campus. -13 students were aware of @UVMtrees. -66 students said that since coming to UVM their awareness of trees has not changed. -When we asked what trees they wished to see on campus, 22 said they were satisfied with the types already one campus. Some popular trees included willows, redwoods, palm, cherry blossoms, and apple trees.

Conclusions We think more needs to be done to raise awareness about the trees on our campus. From this survey, it seems like students are vaguely aware of the trees. We think UVM needs to get students thinking about trees more. We hope that the rest of our class's final projects will help with this goal. For the future: Another survey should be done to see if we are actually increasing awareness.
