2 HHS Organizational Chart
CDC is one of 11 Operating Divisions within Department of Health and Human Services. ATSDR is a separate Operating Division within DHHS but is managed by a common director’s office at CDC. CDC is the only HHS Operating Division with headquarters outside of the Washington DC area.

3 CDC Works for You 24/7 CDC works 24/7 keeping America safe from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and domestic. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights it and supports communities and citizens to prevent it. CDC is the nation’s health protection agency - saving lives, protecting people from health threats, and saving money through prevention. Within CDC’s Office of the Chief Operating Officer, the Procurement and Grants Office (PGO) fulfills a critical role in supporting public health programs and science.

7 Procurement and Grants Funding History (Billions)
Today, CDC is the nation′s premier health promotion, prevention, and preparedness agency and a global leader in public health. Over 80% of CDC’s budget is spent through procurement activities to support the agency’s mission of ensuring national and global pubic health. CDC is globally recognized for conducting research and investigations and for its action-oriented approach. CDC applies research and findings to improve people′s daily lives and responds to health emergencies—something that distinguishes CDC from its peer agencies. CDC is now focusing on becoming a more efficient and impactful agency by focusing on five strategic areas: supporting state and local health departments, improving global health, implementing measures to decrease leading causes of death, strengthening surveillance and epidemiology, and reforming health policies.

11 Who do we fund? CDC funds organizations through the award of grants and cooperative agreements. Examples: State and Local Health Departments American Indian/Native American/Alaska Native Tribes/Organizations Academic Institutions Professional Societies Volunteer Agencies Community Based Organizations International Health Organizations Private Sector State and Local Health Departments CDC does not make awards to individuals.
