1 Writer’s Notebook Thurs Aug 29 Begin writing when you enter class; write until I tell you to stop; if you get stuck, recopy your last sentence until you get unstuck! I will take up an entry one time per week for a daily grade. Stay on task; turn in good work. That is how you get a good grade! Today’s Writer’s Notebook topic- date it/copy it, then write about it….. Write about a time of upheaval for you. Maybe it was the birth of a sibling, a move to a new place, your parents’ divorce or separation, maybe an illness you have experienced….

(comma splice) Rewrite sentence 4 times 1. replace comma with a period and capitalize “we” 2. add a coordinating conjunction after the comma 3. replace comma with only a semi-colon 4. replace comma with a semi-colon, a conjunctive adverb, and a comma following the conjunctive adverb

8 Wednesday, Sept 4 Writer’s Notebook 2: What is your attitude toward “old people” that you know”? What is our culture’s attitude toward “old people” as seen in movies and television? Write about how you believe old people should be treated in our society. Bellringer 2: copy the sentences and choose the correct word for each 1. I ran (farther, further) than you did at yesterday’s cross country practice! 2. You should study this topic (farther, further) until you know more about it. Which word is the correct word? How do you know ?

9 Wed Sept 4 Honors Homework 1.Study these: a lot, all right, advice, advise, farther, further-- and be ready to use them correctly in sentences. Study with your Practical Stylist and computer. 2. Read pp. 402-411 in lit textbook. 3. Answer questions # 8 and #9, p. 412 and have ready to turn in at beginning of class on Thursday this week. 4. Thursday: test over “Most Dangerous” and a lot, all right, advice, advise, farther, further 5. Complete ACT English Test Practice worksheet. Due at beginning of class on Thursday also.

10 Learning targets: I can correctly use “advice,” “advise,” “a lot,” “all right,” “farther,” “further.” I can combine subordinate and independent clauses correctly, using correct punctuation. I can read for meaning and analyze an author’s style by examining “diction,” “syntax,” and “tone.” I can analyze an essay for its main idea and its supporting evidence and detail. I can find a paragraph’s topic sentence.

11 Thursday, Sept 5 Writer’s Notebook- write about a time when you were inspired to do better, try harder, be a better person….or a time when you tried to inspire someone else Bellringer 2- Combine these independent clauses in three different ways 1. It has been a good week 2. I hope next week is even better

12 Thursday, Sept 5 Today’s agenda: 1. Writer’s notebook 2. Bellringer 3. QUIA.COM test over “The Most Dangerous Game” including the vocabulary words and the grammar lesson in the text 4. What do I do after I finish taking my test? Hit the “home” button in the upper left-hand corner of your quia page; click on your class’s web link; you will find games/activities there….choose what you’d like to do and play learning games until end of period

13 Friday, Sept 6 Writer’s Notebook-write about another culture that interests you…Asian, Hispanic, European, American Indian, South Pacific, African….make a list of questions you have about that culture, and you may also write about what you already know about the culture and how you acquired that information Bellringer 3- Combine these independent clauses 3 different ways. You may change one of them to a subordinate clause if you wish. I love to go to the movies. I like to order a buttery popcorn and Coke before the show begins.

Complete #1-5 p. 422 about direct and indirect objects (use Internet to acquire more information about this subject, as needed)

15 Monday, Sept 9 Learning targets: I can identify independent clauses. I can identify subordinate clauses. I can identify sentence fragments and run on sentences. I can correct run on sentences in one of 5 ways. I was in the middle of a movie when the telephone rang. It was my brother—he was calling to tell me he got a new job. It was really great news because he’d been unemployed for 5 months. He’d been laid off along with 30 others at his company. Fortunately for him, the new job pays better than his old one, and he has more flexible hours. He starts the new job on Monday.

16 Monday, Sept 9 Agenda 1. No bellringer today. 2. No Writer’s Notebook today. 3. Turn in Friday’s homework. 4. Today: practice rewriting a paragraph so that it no longer has any run one sentences, sentence fragments, or comma splices in it. Compare work in small groups. No homework today!
