New York State Variable Speed Drive Farm Program Program ran from 1999 to 2003. Funding source was the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). 572 dairy producers across the state participated in the program, installing and receiving rebates for milking vacuum pump variable speed drives. The program saved 10 million kWh, 2.92 tons of NO x emissions, and delivered $1.2 million first-year energy savings to participants.

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO This program offers cash incentives on equipment such as variable speed drives, lighting, ventilation, and more to dairy customers of Pacific Gas and Electric Company. To date this program has saved agricultural customers of PG&E about 4 million kWh, which equals $560,000 in energy savings. Dairy Energy Efficiency Program

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Maryland Farm Energy Audit Program Phase I &II Currently partnering with 9Maryland organizations Program operation 2007-2008 Performing energy audits for 75 farms Energy savings, production benefits recommended

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Diesel Emission Reduction Program Educated farmers in Eastern Washington State about no-till direct seeding and provided incentives for each acre switched from conventional tillage to no-till direct seeding. Ran from December 2006 to December 2007 Helped 21 farmers enroll over 16,000 acres into the program and helped save over 26,000 gallons of diesel fuel, a 59% reduction in fuel use.

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Energy audits What is an energy audit? An energy audit records and analyzes energy use and recommends actions to reduce energy usage and/or increase production. EnSave offers three levels of audits: –Level1 Basic (CSP) –Level 2 Comprehensive –Level 3 Custom (Section 9006 or integrated audits)

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO EnSave uses a 5 step process for energy audits

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Step One: Pre-site Visit Interview Identify specific needs of producer and collect information about the operation Inform producer of the data we’ll need in advance: electric and gas/propane bills to determine usage history Explain the audit process – what to expect, how long it will take Identify possible bio-security issues

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Step Two: Site Visit A data collector visits the site to collect energy end-use data: –Lighting (wattage, number and type of lights) –Ventilation (fan make, model, and speed) –Insulation (where and how much) –Motors (HP, make, and model) –Heating (equipment type, make, and model) –Interested in renewable energy opportunities? –Other

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Step Three: Data Analysis Raw data is entered into EnSave’s audit software, AutoAudit TM EnSave calculates energy savings and/or production benefits

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Step four: Reporting EnSave creates a narrative report, which includes: –An analysis of present energy usage –Recommendations for improvements –Cost analysis of recommended improvements, including payback period –Productivity improvements, if any

2008 SARE, New American Farm Conference, March 25-27, 2008 / Kansas City, MO Step five: Follow-up EnSave calls the producer to review the narrative report, and answer any questions. We talk with the producer to encourage them to take action and move forward with the recommendations.
