Items from meeting between Carol, Gail, Ben and Rich Fees Banquet policy

Anything? Ben, Jim, Gail, Carol (who has to leave?) Companions Get together – Carol will organize (?) invite person from Newport Beach Visitors Bureau – We will need to provide a “host”

Poster A first pass by Aneta No response yet from Leanne. Poteet Webpage Http://physics.uc r.edu/dnp2012

Invited Session (we are responsible) Invited Session (3 talks- decided) Nuclear Physics in “Southern” California: Possible talks include  13 (first results available ? – update? LHC/RHIC results and comparisons *- does energy scale make a difference? - (Post QM 2012, there will be many new results. PC may want a dedicated heavy ion session) Barbara Betz post-doc at Columbia, Karel Safaik. He is at CERN (ALICE) but is a wise sage who has followed the RHIC program very carefully elements 114 and 116. Mark Stoyer (chosen?) Special Speaker/After dinner speaker – Update on Alan Alda (Jutta) – Special session thursday eve if he can come – Jennifer Oualette available – Speaker (from Caltech) on Mars Rover (Brad) * related invited talk and workshop (invited talk is not a summary of workshop )

Workshops (we are responsible – coordinate with program committee) 3 workshops/session – 2 sessions =6 total – 1.5 hrs each (e.g. 3 speakers) ( speakers each with a coffee break 25+5) Note one of the sessions can be 2 hrs long e.g. with 4 speakers Topics – I Status and Future Prospects of Underground Physics/Probing the New Standard Model A) Status and Future Prospects of Underground Physics (Brad Filippone (Caltech), Alan Poon (LBNL) B) Probing the New Standard Model Brad Filippone (Caltech), Alan Poon (LBNL) – II A, B And Here be Dragons: Understanding the Nature of Unstable Isotopes (Jutta Escher (LLNL), Calvin Johnson (SDSU)) – III A, Heavy Ion and Spin Physics at RHIC and the LHC (K. Barish (UCRiverside), M. Calderon (UCDavis) Ri.Hollis (UCR), A.Iordanova (UCR) J. Thomas (LBNL) A) Heavy Ions (will be many new results) (we will need a replacement for manuel) – Jets, quarkonia, heavy flavor, energy scan – Theory B) RHIC/Spin (Ken in charge) – Longitudinal - primarily results from 500GeV run: A_L (W) and A_LL for DeltaG. – Transverse (500 and 200GeV) - STAR FMS, PHENIX MPC results – Possibly also pQCD theory talk. Global analysis and/or transverse phenomena

Teachers session (Maria) We will need to provide a “Welcome” speaker (for lunch) Andrea to get a sense of how many teachers we should/could involve in this event I am also going to try to get in touch with another high school teacher (James Lincoln) that could be helping us with the instruction part of this event. He participated last year in the physics academy at UCR. The topic for the workshop for the teacher will be around radiation and detection of radiation. This way we can involve all the spectrum from nuclear reactor, NASA and medical physics. I think is best if we run our own workshop and we ask other agencies (e.g. American Nuclear Society and NASA) to donate freebies for the teachers. The main cost for the cloud chamber is the Pb-210 needle source. PASCO Scientific sells it for about $50. We may get a good deal for larger quantities, but it would stay at around $40/needle. I have not run all the numbers, but probably the cost for all the materials for the workshop could be about $70/teacher. It would be great if DNP could pay for all of it, but we can also set up a registration fee for the workshop participation ($40). This could take care of the cost for the needle source and DNP pay for the remaining materials and the food. For the cloud chamber, I need pure isopropyl alcohol (at least 95%). I still need to find a vendor.

Anything else? (ben, jim, Carol?)
