American Advertising Federation 3 rd District Meeting August 6, 2011

The AAF protects and promotes advertising at all levels of government through grassroots activities. Our nationwide network monitors advertising-related legislation on local, state and federal levels. We put our members face-to-face with leading lawmakers. We encourage industry self-regulation as a preemptor to government intervention, when appropriate. Government Relations

Put together a committee comprised of companies that have a large government relations group. Lobbyists and communications specialists are examples. Purpose – assemble a group that can keep an eye on legislation that directly affects advertising at the local, state and federal levels. Government Relations Committee

Sign up for the National AAF e-newsletter that covers government relations by emailing government@aaf.orggovernment@aaf.org The newsletter is emailed every 5-10 days during the congressional year and provides a brief overview of advertising-related policy and legislative developments. Sign up for AAF SmartBrief, an opt-in news service, at www.smartbrief.com/aaf. This service condenses advertising industry news from dozens of media sources into a succinct, easy to read email. www.smartbrief.com/aaf Tools and Resources

The issues facing the advertising industry in Congress, the regulatory agencies and states continue to proliferate. For advertising to continue to play a prominent role in the economy (and our culture), we must be both knowledgeable and prepared to educate decision makers about the implications of the issues they address. Meet and Greets – meet with members of Congress at the AAF headquarters in Washington, DC to discuss advertising-related issues. Tools and Resources

The appropriate time to meet with your public officials is BEFORE not AFTER you need them. If you are located in a capital city, invite key legislators and local officials to your meetings as guest speakers. Host a legislative appreciation day, or a similar event, to encourage networking with these individuals. Present a legislator or public official of the year award at the beginning of your Addy event. Provide regular communication to your members through email blasts and/or club websites, blogs and forums. Ways to Engage Your Government Relations Members
